The Kentucky 2nd Cavalry Regiment (Morgan's / Dukes) was organized during the summer of 1862 using Morgan's Kentucky Cavalry Squadron as its nucleus. The unit contained men from Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi, and Alabama. It served in Morgan's Brigade and was active in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. Many were captured in the conflict at Buffington Island on July 19, 1863 and the remaining part at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The regiment was not reorganized. The Kentucky 8th Cavalry Regiment was formed during the late summer of 1862 and mustered into Confederate service in September. The unit fought in Kentucky, then rode with J.H. Morgan. Most of the men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and a remnant at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The 8th was not reorganized. Following Gen. Morgan's death the men of the 8th who had not been captured were merged with the KY 12th Cavalry Regiment to form the KY 8th/12th Consolidated Cavalry Regiment.

Gen. John Hunt Morgan's regiment was a hand-picked unit of approximately 2200 men. It was around the first of July, 1863 when John Hunt Morgan, with approximately 2400 hand-picked men again entered Kentucky at Burkesville to begin the "Great Raid." Gen. Basil Duke's account states that the men were chosen from those under Morgan's Command and also from Johnson's. Based on the number of men at his disposal, approximately 1 out of every 10 were chosen. Morgan's Brigade was active in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. The Kentucky 11th Cavalry Regiment was organized in Madison County, Kentucky, with 410 officers and men. It skirmished in Kentucky and Tennessee, then rode with J. H. Morgan into Indiana and Ohio. Most of the men were captured at Buffington Island on July 19 and some at New Lisbon on July 26, 1863. The unit was not reorganized. Some of the men served later under Gen. Basil Duke and are reported to have been a part of President Davis' escort at the end of the war.
