DOWNLOAD EBOOKFew places in the country can boast the extraordinary historic architecture possessed by Nashville, a remarkable hybrid city integrating both New South commerce with Old South charm and traditions. During the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, many affluent families, including governors, statesmen, and presidents, built luxurious homes in many different revival styles of architecture such as Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival, Greek Revival, and Colonial Revival. Since that time, residents and countless visitors to Nashville alike have enjoyed their dramatic and imposing exteriors. In this volume, you are given a special opportunity to walk into these homes and explore their fascinating interiors as they appeared from 1866 to 1920. Nashville Interiors: 1866 to 1920 provides valuable insight into the tastes and needs of the families who lived in these historic homes, from their formal parlors and gardens to their private dining rooms and bedrooms. Within these pages, the capital city's most famous country homes, such as Belmont Mansion, Belle Meade Plantation, and the Hermitage, and a wide assortment of city dwellings, boarding schools, hotels, and businesses again open their doors, allowing today's viewer a rare, intimate glimpse into their past.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBenjamin Franklin Cheatham was a Nashville native and a descendant of the city's founder, James Robertson. Born in 1820, he achieved fame through his military service in the Mexican War and, especially, the Civil War. After the war Cheatham farmed, ran for Congress, and, at the time of his death in 1866, was postmaster of Nashville. Cheatham was one of Nashville's most popular sons, and his funeral, which drew some thirty thousand people, was reportedly the largest ever held in the city.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKFirst published in 1974, Architecture of Middle Tennessee quickly became a record of some of the region's most important and most endangered buildings. Based primarily upon photographs, measured drawings, and historical and architectural information assembled by the Historic American Buildings Survey of the National Park Service in 1970 and 1971, the book was conceived of as a record of buildings preservationists assumed would soon be lost. Remarkably, though, nearly half a century later, most of the buildings featured in the book are still standing. Vanderbilt staffers discovered a treasure trove of photos and diagrams from the HABS survey that did not make the original edition in the Press archives. This new, expanded edition contains all of the original text and images from the first volume, plus many of the forgotten archived materials collected by HABS in the 1970s. In her new introduction to this reissue, Aja Bain discusses why these buildings were saved and wonders about what lessons preservationists can learn now about how to preserve a wider swath of our shared history.
