DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn A History of Spanish Institutions the evolution of Spanish institutions from the first human settlements on the Peninsula to the present day is offered in a succinct and appropriately contextualised manner. To this end, each chapter combines a description of the historical context of a period with the description of its most characteristic institutions. These are complemented by an explanation of the main “symbols” of Spain and their history. The importance of institutions and their historical evolution as a determining factor in economic and socio-political development has been proved by numerous studies. Hence, the knowledge of the main national institutions from a historical, legal and economic perspective is essential for those who wish to operate in the Spanish market. The modular structure of the handbook, together with the differentiated presentation of the content according to its level of relevance, will allow the readers to adapt and combine the texts that make up this book according to their specific needs and interests, thus optimising the outcome of their study. This revised and expanded second edition has added a selection of empirical works to the introductory chapter, reflects the latest historiographical developments, updates the bibliography, includes new examples of symbols, and expands on the main historical milestones and their institutional impact up to the time of going to press.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKSpanish identity in the age of nations offers the first comprehensive account in any language of the formation and development of Spanish national identity from ancient times to the present. Much has been written on French, British and German nationalism, but remarkably little has been published on Spanish nationalism. Paradoxically, even in Spain there is much more on Basque, Catalan and other regional nationalisms than on Spanish identity. As a result, this study fills an enormous gap in the literature on Spanish history. This book traces the emergence and evolution of an initial collective identity within the Iberian Peninsula from the Middle Ages to the end of the ancien regime based on the Catholic religion, loyalty to the Crown and Empire. The adaptation of this identity to the modern era, beginning with the Napoleonic Wars and the liberal revolutions, forms the crux of this study. None the less, the book also embraces the highly contested evolution of the national identity in the twentieth century, including both the Civil War and the Franco Dictatorship. Álvarez-Junco ́s pioneering study was awarded both the National Prize for Literature in Spain and the Fastenrath Prize by the Spanish Royal Academy

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDuring the last decade of Franco’s repressive rule, the Spanish outlook on sex, drugs, and fashion shifted dramatically, creating a favourable cultural environment for the return of democracy. Exploring changes in urban planning, narratives of sexual and gender identity, recreational drug use, and fashion design during the seventies, Sex, Drugs, and Fashion in 1970s Madrid argues that it was during this decade that the material and emotional conditions for the groundbreaking transition to democracy first began to develop. Thanks in part to a mass media saturated with international trends, citizens of Madrid began to adopt practices, behaviours, and attitudes that would ultimately render Franco’s military dictatorship obsolete. This cultural history examines these modest but irreversible changes in the way people lived and thought about their lives during the last decade of the regime’s creed. Not a revolution necessarily, but transformational nevertheless, these changes in collective sensibility eased the political transition to democracy and the emergence of the 1980s’ cultural movement la Movida.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe present English version, authorized by the publishers and heirs of M. Merimee, is based on the third French Edition. New material of two sorts has been added, however. First, the translator has been allowed to utlize an annotated, interleaved copy of the Precis, 1922, in which the author, and after his death his son Henri, himself a distinguished Hispanist, had set down material for the next revision. This accounts for many inserted names and phrases, and some paragraphs. Second, the translator has rewritten and added with some freedom.
