DOWNLOAD EBOOKAnnotation Hippocrates, said to have been born in Cos in or before 460 BCE, learned medicine and philosophy; travelled widely as a medical doctor and teacher; was consulted by King Perdiccas of Macedon and Artaxerxes of Persia; and died perhaps at Larissa. Apparently he rejected superstition in favour of inductive reasoning and the study of real medicine as subject to natural laws, in general and in individual people as patients for treatment by medicines and surgery. Of the roughly 70 works in the 'Hippocratic Collection' many are not by Hippocrates; even the famous oath may not be his. But he was undeniably the 'Father of Medicine'. The works available in the Loeb Classical Library edition of Hippocrates are the following. Volume I: Ancient Medicine. Airs, Waters, Places. Epidemics 1 and 3. The Oath. Precepts. Nutriment. Volume II: Prognostic. Regimen in Acute Diseases. The Sacred Disease. The Art. Breaths. Law. Decorum. Physician (Ch. 1). Dentition. Volume III: On Wounds in the Head. In the Surgery. On Fractures. On Joints. Mochlicon. Volume IV: Nature of Man. Regimen in Health. Humours. Aphorisms. Regimen 1Â-3. Dreams. Volume V: Affections. Diseases 1Â-2. Volume VI: Diseases 3. Internal Affections. Regimen in Acute Diseases. Volume VII: Epidemics 2 and 4Â-7. Volume VIII: Places in Man. Glands. Fleshes. Prorrhetic IÂ-II. Physician. Use of Liquids. Ulcers. Haemorrhoids and Fistulas. Volume IV also contains the fragments of Heracleitus, On the Universe.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn this collection of essays, the authors don’t argue with those attributes deemed to be the essence of professionalism in medicine. Instead, they ask questions of the discourse from which they arise, how the specialized language of academic medicine disciplines has defined, organized, contained, and made seemingly immutable a group of attitudes, values, and behaviors subsumed under the label "professional" or "professionalism." This collection aims to be a critical text, one that questions the profession’s beliefs about the nature of its work and how such beliefs are enacted (or not) in medical education, particularly as they fuel the professionalism discourse.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe first edition of Introduction to Pharmacology has over recent years become a highly influential text among students wishing to acquire a knowledge of pharmacology without having to refer to the larger, more detailed, traditional pharmacology volumes. This revised and updated second edition contains significant new material to bring the reader up-to-date with the latest practices and principles in pharmacology. Exploring the basic principles in both the therapeutic and toxicological aspects of drug use, the book employs contemporary examples of medication, supplemented with an increased number of accurate and easy-to-interpret figures and diagrams. Additionally, Introduction to Pharmacology presents the important concept of understanding the limitations surrounding the drugs that cure, replace physiological inadequacies, or treat symptoms, and which have led to the system of drug classification. The broad scope of the book also encompasses the role of the FDA, drugs in sport, and the use of animals for drug experimentation. A clear and accessible book, Introduction to Pharmacology builds on the strengths of the first edition and is an invaluable reference for all students interested in this subject.
