By the cooperation of manufacturers, merchants, and the city and county governments, the Seaboard Air Line Railway, the Southern Railway, and the Norfolk 85 Western Railway were given access to this market. Later the Norfolk Southern Railroad and the Durham 85 Southern Railway were added to the railway lines serving the city, giving a total of five railway companies with seven lines radiating in every direction.
