After it rends its victims to death with its sharp claws, it leaves a hairball behind: a sick kind of calling card left at the scene, in this hysterical parody of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series.

"The Chamber of Cheesecakes has been opened. Dieter's Beware!" reads the sinister warning in this hysterical parody of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series. In this farce all of your favorite Harry Potter characters, places, and past events have been twisted around with devilish wit. You'll follow the adventures of Harry Putter, Ron Cheesley, and Hermione Stranger in their sixth year at school, seventh if you count preschool. While some of the encounters are spoofs reminiscent of the original tales, others are new, keeping the storyline fresh and unpredictable. If you like the original Harry Potter series, you'll love this crazy parody.

This is a book of philosophy and for that, I apologize. Philosophy used to try and explain the world around us and our experiences, to answer the life's big questions, and to help us make sense of it all. If it still did that, it would truly be a great thing! More often of late, to anyone with a shred of common sense, philosophers seem to have lost their marbles. The answers we get to life's questions are more confusing than ever, and the arguments become inane to the point that a common man would regret asking the big questions. There are good reasons for the overall failure of modern philosophy to answer life's big questions. Some of the mistakes were made over 2400 years ago by early western philosophers. When your foundation is built on sand, is there any mystery why the edifice eventually crumbles? Furthermore, modern philosophers have in some cases assumed their own hypothesis from the start, ignoring the evidence of falsehood. And so, again I apologize, for the topics of philosophical discussion can be difficult to swallow and digest. I empathize with you, and so, I will try to make my evaluation of these questions as palatable as possible. More importantly, this is a book of answers and that is truly a great thing! Once you have the answers to the big questions, the little ones will all fall into place. Together we are going to examine these age-old questions and come up with some real answers - ones that will help explain the world around us and our experience of it. Some of the answers will undoubtedly astound you, because truth is astounding. And, of course, there will be those who simply can't handle the truth. In the end, they will be truly ashamed of themselves. They will let this opportunity slip through their fingers and continue to muddle through life without direction. Do you expect the right answers to confirm the floundering life you are leading? Are you unwilling to change your life for the better? Then you must expect and prepare for hard work ahead of you. If you are among those few who already know the answers to life's questions, then you know your life's purpose, and are not floundering, but driven toward this goal. What is more, you are certain that it is the right goal and you are not headed in the wrong direction. You are indeed wise beyond your years. But, please, read on. You may find confirmation in your understanding, you may come across something unexpected, or you may discover you don't know everything you thought you did. For the rest of us, still searching for answers, let's get started.

David Morrow and Anthony Weston build on Weston's acclaimed A Rulebook for Arguments to offer a complete textbook for a course in critical thinking or informal logic. Features of the book include: Homework exercises adapted from a wide range of actual arguments from newspapers, philosophical texts, literature, movies, YouTube videos, and other sources.Practical advice to help students succeed when applying the Rulebook's rules.Suggestions for further practice that outline activities students can do by themselves or with classmates to improve their critical thinking skills.Detailed instructions for in-class activities and take-home assignments designed to engage students in critical thinking. An appendix on mapping arguments, a topic not included in the Rulebook, that introduces students to this vital skill in evaluating or constructing complex and multi-step arguments.Model responses to odd-numbered exercises, including commentaries on the strengths and weaknesses of selected model responses as well as further discussion of some of the substantive intellectual, philosophical, and ethical issues raised by the exercises. The third edition of Workbook contains the entire text of the recent fifth edition of the Rulebook, supplementing this core text with extensive further explanations and exercises. Updated and improved homework exercises ensure that the examples continue to resonate with today’s students. Roughly one-third of the exercises have been replaced with updated or improved examples. A new chapter on engaging constructively in public debates—including five new sets of exercises—trains students to engage respectfully and constructively on controversial topics, an increasingly important skill in our hyper-partisan age. Three new critical thinking activities offer further opportunities to practice constructive dialogue.

The #1 New York Times bestselling (mostly true) memoir from the hilarious author of Furiously Happy. “Gaspingly funny and wonderfully inappropriate.”—O, The Oprah Magazine When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it. In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives. Stitched together over five years of journaling, Obiter Dicta is a commonplace book of freewheeling explorations representing the transcription of a dozen notebooks, since painstakingly reimagined for publication. Organized after Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia, this unschooled exercise in aesthetic thought--gleefully dilettantish, oftentimes dangerously close to the epigrammatic--interrogates an array of subject matter (although inescapably circling back to the curiously resemblant histories of Western visual art and instrumental music) through the lens of drive-by speculation. Erick Verran's approach to philosophical inquiry follows the brute-force literary technique of Jacques Derrida to exhaustively favor the material grammar of a signifier over hand-me-down meaning, juxtaposing outer semblances with their buried systems and our etched-in-stone intuitions about color and illusion, shape and value, with lessons stolen from seemingly unrelatable disciplines. Interlarded with extracts of Ludwig Wittgenstein but also Wallace Stevens, Cormac McCarthy as well as Roland Barthes, this cache of incidental remarks eschews what's granular for the biggest picture available, leaving below the hyper-specialized fields of academia for a bird's-eye view of their crop circles. Obiter Dicta is an unapologetic experiment in intellectual dot-connecting that challenges much long-standing wisdom about everything from illuminated manuscripts to Minecraft and the evolution of European music with lyrical brevity; that is, before jumping to the next topic.
