This Book is the rarest attempt of its kind which brings out the true purpose of performing the basic obligation of Islam called Hajj. It delivers a guidance to any true seeker of Reality and discloses that the spiritual purpose of Hajj is not only to perform the outward rituals with complete submission to Allah but gaining the spiritual experiences of Divine presence and observation. The book opens one’s eyes to the reality that the outward journey of Hajj is resembling to the inward journey towards Allah and is an emphasis on the fact that the worship of Hajj, when performed with the presence of heart, is a way of attaining the ultimate closeness to Allah in the worldly life. The book clarifies the misunderstood concept of shariah in the modern world that Hajj is limited only to certain rituals and convinces the reader to deliberate that Islam and Mysticism embrace each other. Following the pure form of shariah is beginning of the road which leads to the recognition of Allah. Religion, Language and Power shows that the language of ‘religion’ is far from neutral, and that the packaging and naming of what English speakers call ‘religious’ groups or identities is imbued with the play of power. Religious Studies has all too often served to amplify voices from other centers of power, whether scripturalist or otherwise normative and dominant. This book’s de-centering of English classifications goes beyond the remit of most postcolonial studies in that it explores the classifications used in a range of languages — including Arabic, Sanskrit, Chinese, Greek and English — to achieve a comparative survey of the roles of language and power in the making of ‘religion’ . In contextualizing these uses of language, the ten contributors explore how labels are either imposed or emerge interactively through discursive struggles between dominant and marginal groups. In dealing with the interplay of religion, language and power, there is no other book with the breadth of this volume.

"This thesis is a study of traditional narratives which are recited and received both by villagers and pilgrims in regard to the local pilgrimage (ziarah) tradition in Pamijahan, particularly at Shaykh Abdul Muhyi's sacred site. The narratives will be examined as part of the popular beliefs of Priangan Timur or the eastern part of West Java. Locating them in the wider context of Sundanese oral and written traditions, my investigation will illuminate the nature and function of such traditions in the particular case of Pamijahan. The research will elucidate the role of the kuncen, the custodians of sacred sites, as guides and spiritual brokers who maintain the narratives. It will also be important to investigate the villagers' as well as visitors' view of the kuncen in regard to local pilgrimage. The study will also enhance comparative studies concerned with networks of holy men or saints (wali) on the island of Java (Pemberton 1994; Fox 1991: 20). I want to argue that people respond to, and participate in, saint veneration on pragmatic grounds. However, these grounds are subject to interpretation and contestation in time and space. In redefining their narratives, various individuals, such as custodians, Sufis, and even to some extent government functionaries, are considered to be authoritative persons by virtue of their capacity to conduct and manipulate narratives. As this argument develops, it will be important to understand the modes of signification in the village."--Provided by publisher.

Considerable number of books and research articles have been published on the concept of religion and comparative religion. But rarely has any religious scholar elaborated the contribution of different religions from sociological point of view. This well-researched and erudite study discusses the concept of religion with special reference to Dr. Ali Shariati, an eminent sociologist and Muslim scholar of Iran. He brought forth the unique dimensions of the comparative study of religions. The text provides a complete sociological background of various religions and stresses their contributions. In addition, different Islamic ideals and thoughts which need to be understood in modernist’s religious perspective are discussed. For example, the concepts of Imamat, Ijtihad, ‘Enjoining good and forbidding evil’ and Hajj are dealt from a sociological viewpoint. Finally, even the less known dimensions of Islamic ideologies are explained. The book is intended for the postgraduate students of Islamic Studies. Research scholars and postgraduate students of philosophy may also find the book useful. In addition, any reader who is interested in sociology of religion and, in particular, the ideology and other aspects of Islam will benefit from this book.

In this book the Promised Messiah, on whom be peace, discusses the philosophy of divine revelation, the three categories of people who claim to receive revelation, and the distinction of the truthful from the false. He then establishes his truthfulness by documenting over 200 Signs, including the fulfillment of prophecies made by the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, other men of God, earlier scriptures, and his own revelations spanning over twenty-five years. The author cites numerous examples of his enemies who publicly predicted his downfall and demise, only to become the very victims of their own prophecies. God, however, protected him against every assault, while continuously reassuring him of His promise to bless his Community—a promise which continues to bear the seal and testimony of history. The author also appeals to the followers of different faiths to read this book cover to cover to appreciate and accept this evidence as proof that God is One and the Holy Prophet Muhammad is the Messenger of God, and that he is the Promised Messiah raised to unite humanity under the banner of Islam.
