DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Happiness From Thoughts, and Other Sermons These are gracious words. They fall like rain on the mown field, bringing again to life the roots of feeling and of conduct that the hot sun of care has parched. Come, says Jesus, with your laboring and heavy laden souls, and I will give you rest; for I will show you that religion is not to do this act or that, in this way or in another 3 but to live justly and mercifully, and with humble devoutness and this every man can do in his own soul. This only is my yoke, to be meek and lowly of heart; which is an easy yoke and a light burden because truly it is in accordance with the nature of the soul. Now this you see sets peace in the state of the mind and not in any outward doings or fortunes. Now peace is the blessing the world calls for. Do not you wish peace? Has not Heaven always been thought of as a rest? Herbert says that weariness shall toss us to the breast of our Father. Who of you is not tired often? Who of you wages not a strife which sometimes is exhausting? To beat peace, to have a quiet mind, - this always has been a great need, and sought anxiously. I will ask you to take a near view of this rest to which Jesus calls the laboring and heavy laden, for if - rest (as the world thinks) be something to be courted by greatness and power, lying softly on the pillow of the taskmaster but scout ing the cabin of the slave, what is Jesus' invitation worth, who had not where to lay his head P. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from New Starts in Life: And Other Sermons A man has faded out Of the real happiness and strength Of life who does not know what that exhila ration is, who does not feel the brightness of the picture which this verse draws. It is sad indeed when any man comes to that state in which each new day does not seem in some true sense to begin the world anew, recalling every departed hope and brightening every faded color Of the night before. There is a human instinct which tells us that our life, while it is meant to have a great continuousness and to be always one, is no less meant to be full of new starts, to be ever refreshing its forces and be ginning once again. The true proportion between these two feelings, between the sense Oi continuity and the sense Of ever new beginning, makes the fin est, the freshest, and the primest life. We may picture to ourselves two rivers Of wholly different kinds. One is a great, broad, quiet stream, ever moving swiftly but smoothly on, unbroken by rapids, majestic in its calm and noble monotony, each mile Of its great course seeming like every other mile, so perfectly and evidently is it everywhere itself. Its great thought is continuity. The other river is a mountain torrent. Broken and stopped perpetually. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Sermons and Charges IN this chapter the Apostle is treating of the immor tality of man. With great confidence, he expresses his hope of a future state of happiness. Nevertheless, he adds, we walk by faith, and not by sight. That is, this immortality is not a matter of knowledge, but of belief. We cannot demonstrate it, though we are firmly per suaded of its truth. The assertion of the Apostle is not applicable to a future state only; but in almost all the doctrines of revealed religion, we walk by faith and not by sight. Absolute knowledge, in few cases, is granted to us; what we believe may be probable, but it is not certain; for here we see through a glass darkly, and know in part. In a future world we hope to enjoy per feet knowledge but the present world is in some measure a scene of obscurity.
