The Age Wave of "Me Generation" Baby Boomers is becoming a tsunami and people born from 1946 to 1964 are facing a cataclysm of epic proportions. What is a cataclysm; "it is a large-scale and violent event in the natural world, as well as a sudden violent upheaval, especially in a political or social context." As it turns out, we are facing both. My focus here is our inability as a country to manage the age wave and its extreme costs, but to understand the phenomenon, I needed to include other influences such as our overwhelming denial of age as members of the Baby Boomer generation, our lack of even the minimum documents to express our wishes upon our death or a catastrophic health event, the lack of any kind of long-term financial plan, the rising debt we face personally and as a nation, the impact of growing poverty across the age spectrum and our trend towards national isolation. If this sounds a little like panic, you are correct in your assumption. It isn't one thing that is terrifying. It is a coalescing of multiple trends that individually can be devastating, but together, are truly cataclysmic. I am at heart a person filled with hope and I believe that what is at stake here is creating a compelling case for each one of us to face and act upon the truth that is right in front of us. The amazing thing about the truth is that it is simple, and it makes so much sense. In our very complex lives, which we have chosen to make complicated (because it is a great way to feel self important and avoid making the hard decisions we don't want to make), we assume that it can't be easy to find solutions. Guess again! The truth is the truth, and we've done a stellar job avoiding, burying, denying, etc., but we are out of time. So here is the truth in all of its simplicity.
