Excerpt from Greater Salem in the Spanish-American War For Two years previous to the breaking out of the Spanish-American war, certain residents of the Isle of Cuba, about 30,000 in number, had been engaged in a revolution against the mother country of Spain, in an endeavor to secure their independence. War had been raging intermittently on the island for years, and although thousands of Spanish soldiers had been sent to Cuba, the insurgents, as those who were up in arms against the government were called, had almost invariably won the battles, or had run away in the face of superior numbers and saved themselves a defeat. This state of things had so enraged the Spanish that the war was carried on with terrible cruelty by them. Cuban soldiers, when caught, were shot under the pretence of being spies, while old women, men and children, who were lured to the cities by the Spaniards by promises of being kept in safety, were starved and ill treated so that they died by the hundreds. During this time the United States had observed strict neutrality, although from time to time efforts had been made by members of Congress to have the insurgents recognized as belligerents, or the Cuban government recognized, but all were unsuccessful. During this period the United States had expended considerable money in maintaining a fleet of cruisers as patrols on the southern coast to prevent American ships from landing arms or supplies on the island to help the insurgents - filibustering, it was called. Excerpt from The Spanish-American War IT has not been my purpose in the preparation of the manuscript of this book to write a full history of the war with Spain; on the contrary, it has been to place on record some of the prominent facts connected with the organization, equipment, and movements of the army, together with the administration of the War Department, with the h0pe that such statement will serve a useful purpose as an example, should another crisis of the same kind occur. Excerpt from A Complete History of the Spanish-American War of 1898 It has been said that no countrys public policy is actuated by unselfishness or the( dictates of humanity. To a certain extent 1;-this is true, since mutual jealousy and dis trust among nations render such a course difficult and well-nigh impossible. But the United States, which struck the blow for liberty in 1776, and for unity in 1861, next smote in the sacred name of humanity. The cries of the dead and dying on her doorsteps fell no longer on deaf ears. Disavowing all intention of adding the island of Cuba to our domain, we made war upon the wickedest nation that claims to be civilized, and we waged it in behalf of a weak but gallant people who needed our 1 help. Not since the world began has a more righteous war been prosecuted bravely to a Jtriumphant conclusion. It is important that all the features of this struggle should be understood. Excerpt from Springfield in the Spanish-American War In the Spanish-American war of 1898, Springfield rose to the occasion as she did in 1770 and 1861 and sent her youngest and best and bravest sons to the front. It was her sons who fought and fell at El Caney, the one battle of modern times where infantry, practically unsupported by artillery, captured a well fortified town and it was her sons who were in the lead in drawing the attacking lines so tightly about the city of Santiago that its surrender had to follow. It was her sons also who, on the high seas, on a fast auxiliary cruiser, did faithful service as a portion of the navy and had the satisfaction of doing their share in remembering the Maine by sinking a Spanish transport and a gun boat. Her sons fell on the battlefield and died in the camps and hospitals after enduring as soldiers, the hardships and toils of one of the shortest yet most important and bloodiest campaigns in history and of the honors of that war, Springfield claims a goodly share for herself.
