DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Government of Canada announced its Great Lakes Action Plan in 1989 to meet its obligations under the 1987 Protocol to the Canada-U.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. One component of the Action Plan is the Cleanup Fund, which provides funds to help develop and demonstrate technologies and remedial techniques to restore beneficial uses in areas of concern (AOCs) designated by the International Joint Commission. The Fund supports two kinds of projects: generic technology development and demonstration projects applicable to several or all AOCs, and specific remedial activities in a particular AOC. This report describes over 100 projects supported by the Cleanup Fund from 1990-91 through the current year. The report organizes the descriptions by AOC, and provides for each project the start date, project status, project contact, and summary of activities and results.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDesign options and planning procedures must be critically examined to ensure that landscapes are created with sensitivity to water quality and management issues as well as overall ecological integrity. Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design presents the history of water as a design and planning element in landscape architecture and describes new interpretations of water management. This text pushes the frontiers of standard water management in new directions, challenging readers into abandoning the comfortable safety of conducting business-as-usual within narrow disciplinary confines, and instead directing views outward to the exciting and incompletely mapped regions of true interdisciplinary water sensitive planning and design. With contributions from renowned practitioners, Part I provides seventeen chapters addressing the subject of site-specific water sensitive design and Part II presents another seventeen chapters focusing on issues relating to the water sensitive planning of riparian buffers and watersheds. In addition, Professor France has provided a "Response" to accompany each chapter, which succinctly underscores the salient features in more detail and emphasizes cross-linking to other chapters in the book. The "Overview" provides a brief road-map to navigate through the section. Finally, the discussion summaries at the end of each section elaborate on past problems, current challenges, and future directions. Handbook of Water Sensitive Planning and Design puts forward the very best of modern water sensitive planning and design and should be required reading for everyone involved in this dynamic and crucial field.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe case studies contained in this book show real life examples of complex problems being addressed through collaboration. The problems confronting modern society are complex and do not lend themselves to simple solutions or linear decision making. They require the involvement of many stakeholders. This is often brought about by networks, which bring together a multitude of players in the search for solutions to public policy issues. This can be challenging, as differing viewpoints and personalities, and often conflicting interests need to be acknowledged and reconciled. Yet without the involvement of all interested parties, solutions that emerge will likely be partial, distorted, and short-lived. The cases span a broad spectrum, including issues of poverty reduction, criminal gang reduction, environmental reparation, economic development for First Nations, building age-friendly communities, and co-management of fisheries.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Great Lakes ecosystem is recognised by many as an international natural resource that has been altered by human activities and climate variability. These alterations have led to degraded water quality, diminished habitat, lower native fish and wildlife populations, and an altered ecosystem. In response, the federal governments of the United States and Canada and the state and provincial governments in the Great Lakes basin are implementing several restoration activities. These activities range from mitigating the harmful effects of toxic substances in lake waters to restoring fish habitat. This books provides the reader with a background on and issues of the Great Lakes restoration initiative, as well as the action plan for the years 2010-2014.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWorld water resources seem to be abundant; however, only 0.7% of this total amount is usable water. And owing to their nonuniform distribution, some countries have abundant water resources, whereas some others suffer from inadequate water, and even face severe water scarcity problems. Moreover, serious water pollution problems make 1/5 of the world’s population (approximately 1.1 billion people) under the risk of water-related diseases. In order to give a guideline to maintain the required quality of water according to the intended use, a group of international experts have come together to write this book. Authors target to pass recent available knowledge and information to the readers, who will vary from academicians, professional engineers and scientists, to undergraduate and graduate engineering students concerned with water quality problems all over the world. This book covers the main fields of Wastewater Treatment with 12 chapters, and uses knowledges in economic, information technologies, biology, etc. to make comprehensive analyses and applications.
