A comprehensive look at the latest advances in soft material gradients Tremendous progress has been made in the field of surface-bound soft material gradients in recent years, with intriguing new areas of investigation opening up and advances in bioanalytics changing the way high-throughput screening methods are used in the design and discovery of catalysts and new materials. This volume provides the first complete, up-to-date summary of the progress in this field, showing readers how to harness the powerful properties of soft matter gradients in the design and development of modern functional materials. Contributed chapters from experts in diverse fields help bridge areas of materials science, chemistry, and biomaterials, covering fabrication techniques, gradients in self-assembled monolayers, polymer gradients, dynamic gradient structures, structure and assembly, mechanical properties, sensors, biomaterial applications, protein adsorption, and organization of cells on gradient surfaces. Readers will learn how to implement the techniques described in the book in their own work, while improving efficacy and lowering research and production costs. Soft Matter Gradient Surfaces is an invaluable resource for chemists, physicists, biologists, and engineers, and anyone who would like to take advantage of these unique soft matter building blocks.

Using illustrated examples of monochrome printing, Gradient Light expands the horizons of what can be achieved with today's variable contrast papers. Master printer Eddie Ephraums reveals the creative potential of these highly flexible papers by demonstrating how a subject, first seen in color, can be translated into a highly individual black-and-white print through a combination of camera and variable-contrast printing techniques.

Gradient Index Optics deals with the application of gradients in optical systems of classical types: gradient index lenses. The emphasis is on the theory and practice related to gradient index lenses. Only isotropic media are considered since they are the ones for which the refractive index at each point is independent of direction. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book begins with a historical background on the use of gradients in astronomy and developments in gradient index lenses, along with the underlying basic theory. The discussion then turns to spherical gradients, paying particular attention to rays, Maxwell's fisheye lens, the Luneburg lens, and astronomical refraction. Subsequent chapters focus on the ray trace in a spherical gradient; axial gradients and their use as an anti-reflection coating; radial gradients and ray tracing in a radial gradient; and fundamentals of aberration theory. The wood lens and ray trace in a general medium are also considered, together with methods for fabrication of gradient elements and measurement of index gradients using an approximate method and interferometric methods. This monograph will be of interest to physicists.
