From the first GPS test satellite entering into orbital operation on 22 February 1978 to the launching aloft of the 23d operational satellite on 28 October 1993, the GPS navigation and global positioning system has been in the midst of a net organization process which has gone on for 16 years. Moreover, it has created a GPS enterprise which is international in character. Several hundred thousand personnel were engaged with an output value of close to 10 billion U.S. dollars. This article introduces application benefits associated with GPS during the Gulf War as well as the results of applications in Chinese map making departments. Finally, two revelations are summarized from among GPS applications.

After going through numberless calamities, setbacks, and losses from delays, the GPS (global positioning system) project, which lasted 20 years, finally announced the completion of deployment of the GPS satellite constellation which includes 24 satellites, following the sending of the last GPS satellite into orbit by the U.S. in the middle ten days of April 1993. GPS is one of the biggest developments in the field of aviation and space navigation/monitoring technology since the introduction of radio navigation 50 years ago. The impact of GPS on aviation is particularly profound. The reason is that, due to its success, it allows us, for the first time in history, to achieve a basic system which is capable of guiding all flight phases. 1993 was the first year that the GPS aviation market (including aircraft and airfields) really took off. The reason was that the whole satellite constellation had gone into operation, creating the conditions for aviation applications associated with high precision and global coverage. In recent years, internationally, global navigation satellite system (GNSS), using GPS as a foundation, as well as future aerial navigation system (FANS), using GNSS as a foundation, have come forward one after the other. Both of these are important applications of GPS in aviation. Obviously, the appearance of new technology will bring important benefits for aviation circles. However, it also presents new challenges. In order to evaluate these very promising new technologies using a realistic attitude, let us begin from investigating GPS development directions and application prospects, combining China's national situation, to seek out the work which we should do and are capable of doing, in expectation of making better use of GPS in order to promote the development of China's aviation industry.

Annotation Beginning with the basic principles of navigation, "Integrated Navigation and Guidance Systems takes a step beyond introductions with a concise look at the flight applications of inertial navigation systems integrated with Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite systems. Written at the senior engineering college level, the textbook takes a tutorial approach, weaving interrelated disciplines together with interactive computer exercises and AINSBOOK software for error analysis and Kalman filter simulation. Get a "technical jump start" with a look at traditional navigation radio aids, inertial guidance systems, and Kalman filters. Launch into GPS applications to navigation, precision approach and landing, attitude control, and air traffic control. More than 100 figures, photos, and tables add to the textbook's value.

Today, Global Positioning System (GPS) has taken a significant place in human life with wide-scale applications. It is a multi-use, space-based radio-navigation system, embracing defense and security, civil, commercial, and scientific research needs. Taking into account the importance of the system, it has been suggested to present current advances of GPS with attention focused on vital aspects of technology. This book provides a general description of GPS, GNSS, and GLONASS with reference to the improvement of characteristics of the segments, including software applications and the equipment itself containing GPS. The book also provides information on application areas. Equally, a number of common shortcomings and errors are described, and elimination and mnimization of such consequences are demonstrated.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has revolutionized the measurement of position, velocity, and time. It has rapidly evolved into a worldwide utility with more than a billion receiver sets currently in use that provide enormous benefits to humanity: improved safety of life, increased productivity, and wide-spread convenience. Global Navigation Satellite Systems summarizes the joint workshop on Global Navigation Satellite Systems held jointly by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering on May 24-25, 2011 at Hongqiao Guest Hotel in Shanghai, China. "We have one world, and only one set of global resources. It is important to work together on satellite navigation. Competing and cooperation is like Yin and Yang. They need to be balanced," stated Dr. Charles M. Vest, President of the National Academy of Engineering, in the workshop's opening remarks. Global Navigation Satellite Systems covers the objectives of the workshop, which explore issues of enhanced interoperability and interchangeability for all civil users aimed to consider collaborative efforts for countering the global threat of inadvertent or illegal interference to GNSS signals, promotes new applications for GNSS, emphasizing productivity, safety, and environmental protection. The workshop featured presentations chosen based on the following criteria: they must have relevant engineering/technical content or usefulness; be of mutual interest; offer the opportunity for enhancing GNSS availability, accuracy, integrity, and/or continuity; and offer the possibility of recommendations for further actions and discussions. Global Navigation Satellite Systems is an essential report for engineers, workshop attendees, policy makers, educators, and relevant government agencies.
