Indonesia is on the cusp of transformative take-off, poised to become a major economic power not just in Asia, but also on the global-stage. This book is a pioneering attempt in comprehensively assessing all attributes, conditions and policies for 33 Indonesian provinces and Indonesia''s trajectory as an emerging middle power. It contains papers and data-sets presented in July 2012, at ACI''s signature Annual Conference. The information that was shared at the conference and presented in the book posit a future where tens of millions of Indonesians will be lifted out of poverty to become a self-sustaining middle-class, which will in turn drive the country into a global leadership role in the 21st century. It is a compelling value-added proposition for policy simulations enabling policy-makers to identify relative weaknesses, strengths, threats and opportunities of individual 33 provinces, guiding them to prioritise areas in crafting policies and development strategies.
Democracy is frequently considered a single (and thus uniform) national programme. However, political structures and opportunities differ clearly in various contexts, and as such they have their own influences and consequences. The study of democracy and democratisation must be reinforced with research that emphasises local perspective over national ones, for it is at the local level that different centres of power interact and understandings of genuine democratic practices are created. It is in this spirit that this book attempts to examine the diverse problem of democracy and democratisation in various Indonesian localities, while also underscoring the importance of considering asymmetrical approaches to democratisation. A mapping of the different local regimes in Indonesia and necessary to understand how they respond to or even bypass the practice of democracy. This book, drawing on eleven case studies, reaches the conclusion that the varied local regimes in Indonesia can be grouped into five categories: formalist/elitist, consociational, pluralist/compromistic, socio-cultural, and formalist/deliberative. Through its mapping of local regimes in Indonesia, this book offer a new passion for the continued and substantive (re)setting of democratisation in Indonesia, which need not be limited to electoral democracy, but may rely on asymmetrical democracy—a democracy that understands and accommodates localities and fundamental for it development. The future democratisation of Indonesia can be truly “ in the regions, from the regions, for Indonesia”. Using such a logic, democracy will be manifested through a bottom-up process, and therefore offer the ability to jointly manages Indonesia’s unity in diversity.
The Proceedings of Batusangkar International Conference VI (BIC VI), that was organized by Graduate Program of IAIN Batusangkar, was held in hybrid platform on 11-12 October 2021 with the main theme " Strengthening Life Harmony in 4.0 Era". The BIC VI conference includes several interesting topics such as Science, Technology Literacy, Engineering, Law, Economy, Education, and Religion. The participants came from various universities and practitioners with a total of 140 papers that were published in a proceedings. What makes large, multi-ethnic states hang together? At a time when ethnic and religious conflict has gained global prominence, the territorial organization of states is a critical area of study. Exploring how multi-ethnic and geographically dispersed states grapple with questions of territorial administration and change, this book argues that territorial change is a result of ongoing negotiations between states and societies where mutual and overlapping interests can often emerge. It focuses on the changing dynamics of central-local relations in Indonesia. Since the fall of Suharto’s New Order government, new provinces have been sprouting up throughout the Indonesian archipelago. After decades of stability, this sudden change in Indonesia’s territorial structure is puzzling. The author analyses this "provincial proliferation", which is driven by multilevel alliances across different territorial administrative levels, or territorial coalitions. He demonstrates that national level institutional changes including decentralization and democratization explain the timing of the phenomenon. Variations also occur based on historical, cultural, and political contexts at the regional level. The concept of territorial coalitions challenges the dichotomy between centre and periphery that is common in other studies of central-local relations. This book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of comparative politics, political geography, history and Asian and Southeast Asian politics.

Combining historical geography with historical demography, and conceived as a study in environmental history, this book examines the long-term relationship between population, economy and environment in the northern half of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Using a rich variety of Dutch historical sources, including VOC and missionary archives, it attempts to reconstruct and analyse patterns of demographic, economic and landscape change throughout this large and ecologically diverse region over a period of almost three and a half centuries. Particular attention is given to the articulation between demographic and economic growth, to levels and determinants of reproductive fertility, to changing disease environments, and to the question of agricultural sustainability and its preconditions. The results call into question some common views regarding the reasons for low population growth, and the relationship between population density and landscape change, in the Southeast Asian past.
