Forward moving, forward thinking. With her Patagonia strapped on her back, and sporting an air of confidence derived from her ambitious undertaking, this unproven hitchhiker strode past all of the indifferent strangers' faces-fearless. Mrs. Gulliver, former prominent socialite, focused on the course ahead of her, invigorated by the refreshing uncertainty of it. She had a commanding presence: five feet, nine inches of indubitable spirit, manifested by a disciplined straight posture and easy, graceful gait. Following the lead of her eldest daughter, albeit three decades later, the vibrant and curious Madelaine Gulliver embarks on her own European hitchhiking trek. When "good-bye" is all that's left to say to those around her, the disgruntled woman befriends the open road. She sips hot chocolate on a mountaintop in Switzerland, walks through the military cemetery at Verdun, and finds unexpected love. Will the adventure continue beyond summer or will these newfound experiences lead back home?

Goodnight and Good Riddance: How Thirty-Five Years of John Peel Helped to Shape Modern Britain is a social history, a diary of a nation's changing culture, and an in-depth appraisal of one of our greatest broadcasters, a man who can legitimately be called the most influential figure in post-war British popular music. Without the support of John Peel, it's unlikely that innumerable artists - from David Bowie to Dizzee Rascal, Jethro Tull to Joy Division - would have received national radio exposure. But Peel's influence goes much deeper than this. Whether he was championing punk, reggae, jungle or grime, he had a unique relationship with his audience that was part taste-maker, part trusted friend. The book focuses on some 300 shows between 1967 and 2004, giving a thorough overview of Peel's broadcasting career and placing it in its cultural and social contexts. Peel comes alive for the reader, as do the key developments that kept him at the cutting edge - the changes in his tastes; the changes in his thinking. Just like a Peel show, Goodnight and Good Riddance is warm, informative and insightful, and wears its enthusiasm proudly.

In a delightful new romantic comedy from Elinor Lipman, one woman’s trash becomes another woman’s treasure, with deliriously entertaining results. Daphne Maritch doesn't quite know what to make of the heavily annotated high school yearbook she inherits from her mother, who held this relic dear. Too dear. The late June Winter Maritch was the teacher to whom the class of '68 had dedicated its yearbook, and in turn she went on to attend every reunion, scribbling notes and observations after each one—not always charitably—and noting who overstepped boundaries of many kinds. In a fit of decluttering (the yearbook did not, Daphne concluded, "spark joy"), she discards it when she moves to a small New York City apartment. But when it's found in the recycling bin by a busybody neighbor/documentary filmmaker, the yearbook's mysteries—not to mention her own family's—take on a whole new urgency, and Daphne finds herself entangled in a series of events both poignant and absurd. Good Riddance is a pitch-perfect, whip-smart new novel from an "enchanting, infinitely witty yet serious, exceptionally intelligent, wholly original, and Austen-like stylist" (Washington Post).

In this collection of essays, ten leading writers from different countries consider the conflicts that have informed their own literary lives. 1914-Goodbye to All That borrows its title from Robert Graves's "bitter leave-taking of England" in which he writes not only of the First World War but the questions it raised: how to live, how to live with each other, and how to write. Interpreting this title as broadly and ambiguously as Graves intended, these essays mark the War's centenary by reinvigorating these questions. The book includes Elif Shafak on an inheritance of silence in Turkey, Ali Smith on lost voices in Scotland, Xiaolu Guo on the 100,000 Chinese sent to the Front, Daniel Kehlmann on hypnotism in Berlin, Colm Toibin on Lady Gregory losing her son fighting for Britain as she fought for an independent Ireland, Kamila Shamsie on reimagining Karachi, Erwin Mortier on occupied Belgium's legacy of shame, NoViolet Bulawayo on Zimbabwe and clarity, Ales Steger on resisting history in Slovenia, and Jeanette Winterson on what art is for. From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

The purpose of this poetry is dual. Firstly, for humor and entertainment so we can appreciate the things we have. Secondly, to get people to think of the very serious and sobering times we are living in. In life we all experience things that breakdown or wear away and need to be replaced or repaired. We can take clothes or items for granted. When certain things are worn away or no longer function, we are forced to take notice. A malfunctioning hot water tank, for example, will really be missed. Like many a property owner, the author knows about the frustration and expenses to replace things. He puts a humorous spin on things with rhymes. For example: “Good-bye, faithful underwear, I will always remember us as a happy pair. But there is no doubt you are all worn out. You have lost your elasticity; therefore, I will have to dispose of you as fast as electricity.” “Good-bye, suppository; you are important, but you get no glory.” “Good-bye, toilet bowl; I must rid you; that is my goal.” “Good-bye, toothbrush; have to get rid of you in a rush.” “Good-bye, long time refrigerator; I cannot say, see you you later.” In Poor Richards Almanac, Benjamin Franklin stated, “When the well’s dry, we know the worth of water.” We can appreciate big or small conveniences in life. From a religious and serious perspective: “Good-bye, America, sorry to see you go, seeing your character and morals have sunk so low.” Even So Come, Lord Jesus” is a prophetic poem. “Good-bye, Death and Grave” speaks of things and life being temporary. The author ends certain poems with a biblical prophetic and positive message: There is a future hope beyond our physical existence. Editor’s note: In this highly observant yet humorous collection, the author examines various good-byes life brings: to unwanted pounds, to old tools that have been used up, or to needed items in sudden accidents. Some partings are sweeter than others; a spectrum of emotion is covered in these poems. Readers will laugh at some poems and relate to others, making this a well-rounded, enjoyable compilation.
