Directed at future general managers and international executives rather than HR specialists, it is designed to help readers recognize the critical human resource issues underlying the cultural and economic challenges they face. The book's approach is truly global in nature, not just focused on expatriates from the home office. The authors also recognize contemporary trends in the global business arena, including the growing use of contingent workers, strategic alliances, and the need to have an active influence on the workers in these new organizational relationships. Reader-friendly tools, including an opening case scenario in each chapter to attract interest and emphasize topic importance, enhance the book's practical, real-world emphasis. For this edition new end-of-chapter short cases as well as new topics, ideas, and illustrations featuring current issues and challenges such as the global economic challenge have been added; and updated Internet resource references are provided for each chapter.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, University of Kassel (Wirtschaftwissenschaften), course: International Human Resource Management, language: English, abstract: “The performance of global firms depends on their ability to cope with heterogeneous cultural, institutional and competitive environments.” In today’s world of globalization more and more people are sent abroad by their company. Most of these companies are multinational companies (MNEs) that have subsidiaries, cross-border alliances, international joint ventures or franchise partners. There are so many reasons why companies are sending employees abroad, for example for preparing and managing a merger and acquisition or just to make experiences abroad for a better intercultural understanding between the home company and the host company. The ultimate objectives are knowledge transfer and a common corporate management. As soon as a company leave the national borders it is predicted that it needs employees who are able to manage in an international environment. The IHRM (International Human Resource Management) of a company has therefore a difficult selection process to handle. In this term paper the targets and motivations for an international assignment will be outlined from the entrepreneurial as well as from the employee’s point of view and demonstrate how these motivations play a role for a successful international assignment. In the main part it will be shown which selection criteria are important concerning the selection of global managers. Here a global manager is synonymous with an international assignee or an expatriate because most of the assignees hold a leading position. This term paper is not concentrated on selecting for a special international assignment like for a merger and acquisition or a joint venture, but for selecting assignees for international assignments in general, trying to identify the concerning problems for a long-term assignment. It is to point out which are the criteria and requirements for global managers an international environment. Furthermore two important factors for selection will be pointed out more precisely, the cultural and the family adjustment. For the IHRM the political and juridical subject like international compensation or international contracts is an important issue but it would take us too far afield and thus unregarded here. In this text the female form is renounced for a better reading flow, but the male form always implies the female form, too.

Global Human Resource Management therefore is a very challenging front in Human Resource Management. If one is able to strike the right chord in designing structures and controls, the job is half done. Subsidiaries are held together by Global Human Resource Management, different subsidiaries can function operate coherently only when it is enabled by efficient structures and controls. Globally, the corporate experts are putting in their best efforts to research, renovate and redefine the tools, techniques and concepts of business management to provide customized services and improve the efficiency level of employees. Apart from these tolls, techniques and concepts of business management, there is a need to understand other things that can strengthen professional acumen and can improve competencies. The new millennium prompts us to take a hard look at what all has gone by, what is the scenario today and what needs to be changed to meet the new demands of the future. Therefore, the human resource function will be to survive, cope and adapt in the turbulent environment along with their primary aim of working for an all-round development of our most important resource 'The Human Being'. This book is an aims in bringing the field closer together by illustrating and analysing some of the analytic and practical links between the two. We do not seek to submerge the distinctive and different contributions from industry and marketing management makes to our understanding of management of human resource and organisation.
