Excerpt from Gleanings Among the Castles and Convents of Norfolk From the year 1845 to the beginning of the present year I held the office of Honorary Secretary to the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society, the General Meetings of which were held either in Norwich or some town in the county, from which an excursion could be made to one or other of the most interesting of the Antiquities of the district. In the arrangement of these meetings I took a somewhat active part; and with the view of making our gatherings as useful as possible, I gleaned all the information I could, as well from the buildings and remains themselves, as from all the public and private records to which I was permitted access. The result was the accumulation of a large mass of notes and a series of careful surveys, made on the spot and usually aided by excavations.
