Although in some respects more technical in their subjects and style thanDarwin's "Journal," the books here reprinted will never lose their valueand interest for the originality of the observations they contain. Manyparts of them are admirably adapted for giving an insight into problemsregarding the structure and changes of the earth's surface, and in factthey form a charming introduction to physical geology and physiography intheir application to special domains.

Excerpt from Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands and Parts of South America Visited During the Voyage of H. M. S. "Beagle" The first edition of my Geological Observations on the Volcanic Islands, ' visited during the voyage of h.m.s. Beagle, ' under the command of Capt. Fitz Roy, r.n., was published, with the approval of the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury, in the year 1844; and my Observations on South America, ' in 1846. As both these works are now out of print, and as I believe that they still contain matter of scientific value, it has appeared to me advisable that they should be republished. They relate to parts of the world which have been so rarely visited by men of science, that I am not aware that much could be corrected or added from observations subsequently made. The books themselves cannot be obtained for many times the price of the present volume, and both the general reader, who desires to know more of Darwin's work, and the student of geology, who naturally wishes to know how a master mind reasoned on most important geological subjects, will be glad of the opportunity of possessing them in a convenient and cheap form. The three introductions, which my friend Professor Judd has kindly furnished, give critical and historical information which makes this edition of special value.
