Generative Coaching Volume I The Journey of Creative and Sustainable Change There are times in the life of every individual, every marriage, every family, every culture and every business, where what has been done in the past will not help you to successfully go forward into the future. In these situations you have to do something completely new that has not been done before. To be generative means to create something new. That is what this book is about. How do we creatively support ourselves and others to find new solutions and develop new possibilities? Situations calling for generative change also frequently involve a lot of uncertainty, risk, and potential danger. This can bring out inner obstacles and resistances which block creativity and that need to be identified and transformed. To effectively do so requires the ability to engage multiple intelligences and use "out-of-the-box" thinking. In this book, internationally renowned coaches and authors Robert Dilts and Stephen Gilligan present a simple yet powerful six-step approach to navigating the complex path to a more meaningful and fulfilling future. Drawn from transcripts of live seminars, and brilliantly illustrated by Antonio Meza, this first volume provides a clear, practical and lively introduction to the magic of Generative Coaching. Whether you are an experienced coach or someone interested in learning about how to support others to reach more of their potential, this book will provide you with a useful and inspiring road map for navigating the journey of creative and sustainable change.

This book describes an entirely new way of conducting hypnotherapeutic interventions - Stephen Gilligan's generative trance. The first generation of trance work, the traditional hypnosis that still holds sway in most places, considers that both the conscious mind and the unconscious mind of the client are, to put it bluntly, idiots. So trance work involves first 'knocking out' the conscious mind and then talking to the unconscious mind like a 2-year old that needs to be told how to behave. Milton Erickson created the second generation of trance work. He approached the unconscious as having creative wisdom and each person as extraordinarily unique. Thus, rather than trying to programme the unconscious with new instructions, Erickson saw trance as an experiential learning state where a person's own creative unconscious could generate healing and transformation. At the same time Erickson, for the most part, carried the same low opinion of the conscious mind. Thus, Ericksonian hypnosis looks to bypass the conscious mind with indirect suggestions and dissociation and depotentiate it with confusion techniques.

Presence-Based Coaching offers coaches a hands-on resource for developing the capacities and skills needed to be reliably present in all situations, and shows how to let go of habitual—and often ineffective—ways of responding. As author and leadership expert Doug Silsbee explains, once a coach has mastered the inner moves of directing their own attention, they can work to develop the same capability in their clients. The ability of a coach to facilitate lasting, sustainable development in leaders rests on the presence a coach offers to the coach-client relationship.

Creating and managing ecological and sustainable change is a multi-level process. Changing our actions involves changing our mind and mindset. This includes increasing our knowledge and know-how, but it also frequently requires a shift in our priorities and motivations as well. Sometimes it means updating even deeper processes, such as our perceptions of our identity and our sense of purpose. A major theme in this volume is the role that beliefs play in either supporting or inhibiting creativity. Deeply held beliefs weave together all three of the areas that make up our consciousness - cognitive, somatic and field - and thus have a powerful influence on the way we build our realities. In this book, we will show how we can strengthen empowering beliefs as well as identify and transform belief barriers that can disempower us or hold us back. Generative Coaching Volume 3 demonstrates how multiple levels of influences can be integrated into the six steps of the generative coaching process to produce more profound and lasting success in any area of our lives.

Pam McLean offers the most comprehensive and clear explanation of use of self—why it is important and where we need to focus our attention—that I have ever read. In addition, she describes the robust Hudson coaching methodology clearly with lots of examples and always links theory to practice.” —RICK MAURER, author, Beyond the Wall of Resistance; faculty, Gestalt Institute of Cleveland “The new Handbook of Coaching is intellectually satisfying and pragmatically rich, a tour-de-force grounded in a thorough exploration of adult development and coaching models. This major rework of Hudson’s classic offers practitioners extensive guidance on coach methodology, the system dynamics of change, and the crucial use of self. Leadership coaches at any level will find this an invaluable resource.” —DOUG SILSBEE, author, Presence-Based Coaching “With an emphasis on thoroughly understanding one’s self as a coach and supporting one’s clients to understand themselves, as well as their contexts, Pam’s book is very resourceful both practically and conceptually. A Dynamic New Approach to Organizational Change Dialogic Organization Development is a compelling alternative to the classical action research approach to planned change. Organizations are seen as fluid, socially constructed realities that are continuously created through conversations and images. Leaders and consultants can help foster change by encouraging disruptions to taken-for-granted ways of thinking and acting and the use of generative images to stimulate new organizational conversations and narratives. This book offers the first comprehensive introduction to Dialogic Organization Development with chapters by a global team of leading scholar-practitioners addressing both theoretical foundations and specific practices.
