Excerpt from Gas Chemists Handbook, 1916 The magnitude and delicacy of this work is fully realized and this is presented primarily as'a progress report. In time, the Institute would be well repaid for the expense incurred in the publication of such a handbook by the uniformity of practice that would result from the adoption of these methods and by the convenience to the gas Chemist Of having recognized standard methods pertaining to the industry collected in one convenient publication. While this first issue of the Handbook was a very decided step in the right direction, it was recognized that much was still to be accomplished and the continuance of the work de volved upon the 1915 Committee on Chemical Tests. This Committee was unable to do more than report satisfactory progress at the 1915 meeting of the Institute and the same Committee was re - appointed to Continue the revision over 1916. Excerpt from Handbook of Technical Gas-Analysis: Containing Concise Instructions for Carrying Out Gas-Analytical Methods of Proved Utility The field first opened out by Winkler has been very successfully cultivated by other chemists; and it is now quite usual, at any rate in Germany, to perform technical gas-analyses, not merely in chemical works, but for testing the efficiency of steam-boiler furnaces and such purposes. In England some of these pro cesses have also been introduced; but they are not as yet known and appreciated to the same extent as abroad. Hence it may not be unwelcome to English chemists to have a translation of a short treatise, just published by Winkler, which is primarily intended for teaching purposes - that is, for the use of teachers and students in public laboratories - but which likewise serves as a guide and handy book to other chemists wishing to make themselves acquainted with the subject. This treatise is not intended, as was its predecessor, to furnish a complete enumera tion of all apparatus hitherto proposed for technical gas-analysis, but merely to give representative examples of each kind of apparatus, embracing all the divisions of this branch of Chemistry. Excerpt from The Chemistry of Gas Manufacture A knowledge of the elementary truths and processes of Chemistry being pre-supposed, he has endeavoured to furnish the working gas engineer and manager with a concise manual, covering ques tions and points requiring attention in the ordinary course of his, duties, which, it is believed, will be found of practical utility, especially in those gas works where the operations are not of so great an extent as to necessitate the employment of a separate chemical staff. The volume, it is hoped, should also prove utility to students of Gas Manufacture as well as managers, as preparatory to the study of works a larger scope. Excerpt from Technical Gas-Analysis During the twelve years succeeding the second edition of the Handbook, the methods of Technical gas-analysis have been the subject of numerous investigations and publications which have brought about very important changes in that branch of chemical science. When, therefore, the time had come for issuing a new edition, the Author decided not to go over the old ground again, but to start on a fresh basis, and to describe the methods of Technical gas-analysis in his own way, using Winkler's book merely as one of various sources, apart from his own investigations. The result was the composition of this present treatise, which the Author has tried to make as comprehensive and generally useful as possible, without attempting to mention everything published on the subject in question - a course which would have unduly swelled the size of the volume, without corresponding benefit to the reader. He hopes that his effort may be appreciated as successful by the chemists working on gas-analysis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
