This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.
Conceived in the era of eugenics as a solution to what was termed the “problem of the feeble-minded,” state-operated institutions subjected people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to a life of compulsory incarceration. One of nearly 300 such facilities in the United States, Pennhurst State School and Hospital was initially hailed as a “model institution” but was later revealed to be a nightmare, where medical experimentation and physical and psychological abuse were rampant. This report provides a data base for Project Independence Blueprint in the area of synthetic fuels from coal. This area involves both industrial practice and a relatively large amount of advanced coal conversion technology, much of which is on an advanced pilot plant level. It must be emphasized that the report simply identifies representative resources (financial, raw materials, manpower) needed in case a decision is made to achieve given synthetic fuel production rates. The report does not suggest or imply that the resources identified herein, either financial in terms of capital or raw resources in terms of the needed coal mine capacities, are currently available. By simply identifying the critical resources, this report provides a needed data base for decision in the area of synthetic fuels.
