This story is without a doubt inspired by God based upon (Jer. 1:5; Eccl. 3:1-8; Rom. 8:28). God inspired me and convinced me that my life is an open book, that he wants me to share with the world. Moreover, I am compelled to be a witness to all the world that God is a specialist in all things. I am compelled to convince and persuade people that there is more to their life than what others' say. God has always had a plan for us, but sometimes it takes someone who has experienced a miraculous transformation to be a witness of that. From the Cotton Field to the Pulpit is a biography of a young man with a rich cotton field mentality that manifests into a spiritual pulpit mentality. Moreover, this is God's plan to bring glory unto himself. In addition, it is designed to inspire and influence others that God is a specialist and a miracle worker. You just have to trust him (Prov. 3:5-6) that great is his faithfulness (Lam. 3:21-23). It is my prayer that someone is inspired and will not give up or throw in the towel without giving God a try at your life. Moreover, all of our lives have meaning and purpose; we just need someone to help us find our purpose and reason, and that person is God (Matt. 19:26). With much love, Rev. Dr. Albert Joe Harris Jr.

Black Americans have always relied on the oral tradition -- storytelling, preaching, and speechmaking -- to assert their rights and preserve and pass on their history and culture. In the pulpit, courtroom, or cotton field, they have understood the power of words, distinctively delivered, to educate and inspire. Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., one of the nation's finest speakers, imbibed this tradition as a young man and has given it his own unique inflection from his work on the civil rights front lines, to the National Urban League, to positions of influence at the highest level of business and politics. A friend and confidant to presidents, Jordan has never forgotten the men and women -- from Ruby Hurley to Wiley Branton to Gardner C. Taylor to Martin Luther King, Jr. -- whose oratorical skill in service to social justice deeply influenced him. Their examples and voices, reflected in Vernon's own, make this book both a history and an embodiment of black speech at its finest: Full of emotion, controlled force, righteous indignation, love of country, and awe in front of the God-given challenges ahead.

A man in the city hotel, and not a little feared because of his brutality, had done something more brutal than usual, and, the facts coming to Mr. Beecher's knowledge, in his sermon on the following Sunday he expressed in no gentle terms his abhorrence of the act, and in very strong language rebuked the man.... As he passed the hotel there were several standing by, evidently waiting for some development. At that moment the man came down the steps with a pistol in his hand. "Did you say thus and so in your sermon yesterday?" "I did." "Did you intend those remarks for me, or were you meaning me?" "I most certainly did." "Then take it back right here, or by -- I'll shoot you on the spot." "Shoot away" was the reply... -from Chapter X Liberal preacher, abolitionist, social reformer, and proponent for women's suffrage, HENRY WARD BEECHER (1813-1887), brother of Uncle Tom novelist Harriet Beecher Stowe, was one of the most fiery personalities in American public life in the 19th century. SAMUEL SCOVILLE (1834-1902)-omits not one moment of controversy in Beecher's life. From his arming of antislavery forces in the run-up to the Civil War with rifles that came to be dubbed "Beecher's Bibles" to the shocking sex scandal that dogged him in the 1870s, this is the no-holds-barred life of a man passionate of spirit and strong of will.
