Dr. James V. Donadio Jr. was fresh out of his medical residency training in 1966 when he was drafted into the United States Army Medical Corps and sent to Vietnam to supervise a renal (kidney) unit at the 3rd Field Hospital near Saigon. In From the Military Draft to Vietnam: Memoirs of a Physician Serving in the War, Dr. Donadio looks back at his year of treating American soldiers wounded on the battlefield. During his service there, he also cared for Vietnamese civilians in outpatient clinics and Vietnamese children in nearby orphanages. Dr. Donadio found the unique medical practice in the war zone to be both challenging and rewarding, but leaving behind his wife and four children for a year was painful and required extra mental effort on his part to push ahead and attend to his medical responsibilities. His faith also helped him during his time there, and he was honored to serve as Francis Joseph Cardinal Spellman's attending physician during the Cardinal's Christmas 1966 tour of the combat zone. Dr. Donadio's memoirs included both his recollections of these experiences backed by a vast assembly of documentary sources.

Reuel Long's experiences as an MD in the emergency rooms of Flint, Michigan, prepared him for only some of what he would see in a mobile army surgical hospital. Antiwar sentiment among the doctors in basic training at Fort Sam Houston set the tone for his tour as a general medical officer. In March 1971, the 27th MASH played a critical role treating survivors of the deadliest attack on any firebase during the Vietnam War. Long's vivid memoir recalls the casualties he cared for during the war, including one he crossed paths with 44 years later--who in his own words describes his rehabilitation from the loss of his legs and his protesting the war from a wheelchair. An addendum gives an insider's account of the U.S. military's failure to remedy a fatal design flaw in the M16 rifle, which caused an unknown number of American casualties.

More than once during his yearlong duty, thirty-two-year-old Paul J. Pitlyk wondered what had possessed him to leave the security of a neurosurgery practice in the Midwest to experience the blood, guts, and gore of brain surgery at a forward marine hospital during the Vietnam War. In Blood on China Beach, Pitlyk, a neurosurgeon from the Mayo Clinic, shares the story of how he learned his craft in a rudimentary hospital in Vietnam, twelve thousand miles from home. This memoir picks up where most Vietnam battlefield memoirs leave offwhen the choppers deliver the dead and gravely wounded to the field hospitals and the dedicated doctors and medical staff struggle under primitive and unsterile conditions to preserve life. In this environment, Pitlyk was charged with carrying out emergency neurosurgery on those soldiers sustaining head injuries. He details both the emotional and professional factors that played a role in his service and provides a unique perspective to the Vietnam War. Insightful and historically significant, Blood on China Beach shows Pitlyks reverence for life and his admiration for the bravery of the marines he operated on, even as he questioned his own ability to make a difference. This memoir shows Pauls evolution from child to man and from neophyte to surgeon.
