This beautiful and important book highlights the collection of European drawings at the Yale University Art Gallery, one of America's premier university museums. From intimate studies to exquisite finished compositions, this selection of works documents the history of European drawing practices beginning with late-medieval model books and progressing to the verge of the modern period. The accompanying text--written by a team of scholars--offers a unique introduction to various critical and technical aspects of the study of master drawings, brought to life through drawings from a range of national schools and in a variety of media. Among the drawings examined in this handsomely produced volume are an animated pen and ink sketch by Giulio Romano, a pastoral landscape by Claude Lorrain, a forceful and humorous caricature by Guercino, a scene from the epic poem Orlando Furioso by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and a delicate portrait by Edgar Degas.

For anyone seriously interested in the works of Paul Cézanne, Philadelphia is one of the primary pilgrimage sites. At or near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one finds a marvelous concentration of Cézannes from all periods--portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and figures--that cover the major themes of his artistic life. This book catalogues a major exhibition celebrating Cézanne in Philadelphia. Forty-four works are included, representing among them the subjects to which he returned throughout his career. Views of his native Provence include a group of watercolors and late paintings on the monumental theme of Mont Sainte-Victoire. Three portraits of his wife executed over a ten-year period show a remarkable range in handling and expression. Four drawings that have never been published--including one of his son that is newly discovered--are also featured. The culmination of the exhibition and book is the huge canvas of "The Large Bathers" on which Cézanne was working when he died. Together with the other major variations on that theme in the National Gallery, London, and the Barnes Foundation in suburban Philadelphia, it stands as his most ambitious and stately achievement. Cézanne in Philadelphia Collections gives those interested in painting the opportunity to experience a valuable and very generous cross-section of the work of one of the world's most influential artists. It also reaffirms the remarkable resources of fine art that exist in Philadelphia. -- Back cover.
