Excerpt from Fourth Report on the Agricultural Investigations in Alaska, 1900 Investigations at the Kenai station were in continuation of those inaugurated the previous season. Owing to a lack of drainage the fall-sown cereals were winterkilled, but spring-sown barley and oats matured good crops and vegetables were reported of fine quality. Mr. H. P. Nielsen, who was continued in charge of the Kenai station, writes that the example of one year's experiments has already done good, as may be seen by the increased number of small gardens in the vicinity of the station. Additional land has been cleared and pre pared for cultivation at both the Sitka and Kenai experiment stations. Excerpt from Report on Agricultural Investigations in Alaska: 1905 It was explained in last year's report that the work Of the Sitka Station would in the future be devoted chiefly to horticulture. In conformity to this plan two lines of work were undertaken which it seemed most important to prosecute: (1) The introduction, propaga tion, and testing Of fruit trees and fruit bushes, with a View to ascertaining what sorts, if any, can be successfully cultivated in Alaska; and (2) the testing Of varieties Of vegetables best suited to the climate and the soil in various parts of the Territory. Excerpt from Report on Agricultural Investigations in Alaska in 1899 Inasmuch as the present year's work in the investigation of the agricultural possibilities of Alaska is but an elaboration of the plans which were formulated and partly inaugurated last year, a brief sum mary of last year's work and its results would, perhaps, aid in giving a more comprehensive view of the whole subject and serve as a suita ble introduction to the present report. Excerpt from Report of the Alaska Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1917 From an agricultural standpoint, 1917 was the worst season since these investigations have been in progress, the general average of results being, therefore, also the least satisfactory. The summer of 1915 was a favorable season from the standpoint of agriculture. By comparing the daily mean temperature at four of the stations for June, July, and August of that year with the temperatures of the same period for 1917, we find the cause of the difference in results. The facts are as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
