DOWNLOAD EBOOKState-of-the-Art Approaches to Advance the Large-Scale Green Computing Movement Edited by one of the founders and lead investigator of the Green500 list, The Green Computing Book: Tackling Energy Efficiency at Large Scale explores seminal research in large-scale green computing. It begins with low-level, hardware-based approaches and then traverses up the software stack with increasingly higher-level, software-based approaches. In the first chapter, the IBM Blue Gene team illustrates how to improve the energy efficiency of a supercomputer by an order of magnitude without any system performance loss in parallelizable applications. The next few chapters explain how to enhance the energy efficiency of a large-scale computing system via compiler-directed energy optimizations, an adaptive run-time system, and a general prediction performance framework. The book then explores the interactions between energy management and reliability and describes storage system organization that maximizes energy efficiency and reliability. It also addresses the need for coordinated power control across different layers and covers demand response policies in computing centers. The final chapter assesses the impact of servers on data center costs.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book examines the field of parallel database management systems and illustrates the great variety of solutions based on a shared-storage or a shared-nothing architecture. Constantly dropping memory prices and the desire to operate with low-latency responses on large sets of data paved the way for main memory-based parallel database management systems. However, this area is currently dominated by the shared-nothing approach in order to preserve the in-memory performance advantage by processing data locally on each server. The main argument this book makes is that such an unilateral development will cease due to the combination of the following three trends: a) Today’s network technology features remote direct memory access (RDMA) and narrows the performance gap between accessing main memory on a server and of a remote server to and even below a single order of magnitude. b) Modern storage systems scale gracefully, are elastic and provide high-availability. c) A modern storage system such as Stanford’s RAM Cloud even keeps all data resident in the main memory. Exploiting these characteristics in the context of a main memory-based parallel database management system is desirable. The book demonstrates that the advent of RDMA-enabled network technology makes the creation of a parallel main memory DBMS based on a shared-storage approach feasible.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on High-Performance Computing, ISHPC 2003, held in Tokyo-Odaiba, Japan in October 2003. The 23 revised full papers and 16 short papers presented together with 4 invited papers and 7 refereed papers accepted for a concurrently held workshop on OpenMP (WOMPEI 2003) were carefully reviewed and selected from 58 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on architecture, software, applications, and ITBL.
