Excerpt from Four Generations of a Literary Family, Vol. 1 of 2 So far as Hazlitt himself is concerned, I do not attempt to resuscitate any portion of the Memoirs of 1867, unless it should happen to be the elucidation or correction of some point on which I have succeeded since that date in discovering new light. The material found here, so far as it is immediately relevant to him, may be treated as supplementary to what I had to communicate on the former occasion. Excerpt from The Story of a Family, Vol. 1 of 2 IF the writer could flatter herself that this story contained only such defects as would seem to be inseparable from a tale composed c'l phwieurs reprises, she might, perhaps, put in a plea for indulgence. But as she entertains no such com fortable conviction, she thinks it wiser to send it forth without apology, to encounter a judg ment, which, though it will probably be somewhat less apt than her own to discern merits, can scarcely be more alive to imperfections, and assuredly cannot condemn them so unequivocally, because it is impossible that it should feel them. Excerpt from The Fourth Generation It is perhaps well to explain that this story first appeared as a serial early in 1899: that on revision it was found desirable partly to rewrite certain chapters and to enlarge upon certain points. The structure of the story, the characters, and the situations remain unaltered. The question with which the story deals is not fully answered. It is one of those questions which can never be answered; from time to time every man must ask himself why the innocent must suffer, and do suffer every day and in every generation, for the follies and the sins of their forefathers. Every man must find his own answer, or must acknowledge sorrowfully that he can find none. I venture to offer in these pages an answer that satisfies myself. It substitutes consequence for punishment, and puts effect that follows cause in place of penalties. And, as I hope is made plain, it seems to me that I have no less an authority for this view than the greatest of the Prophets of Israel.
