Excerpt from Fame and Fortune: Or, the Progress of Richard Hunter "Fame and Fortune," like its predecessor, "Ragged Dick," was contributed as a serial story to the "Schoolmate," a popular juvenile magazine published in Boston. The generous commendations of the first volume by the Press, and by private correspondents whose position makes their approval of value, have confirmed the author in his purpose to write a series of stories intended to illustrate the life and experiences of the friendless and vagrant children to be found in all our cities, numbering in New York alone over twelve thousand. In the preparation of the different volumes, the requisite information will be gathered from personal observation mainly, supplemented, however, by facts communicated by those who have been brought into practical relations with the class of children whose lives are portrayed. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from Up the Heights of Fame and Fortune: And the Routes Taken by the Climbers to Become Men of Mark The present volume is intended for popular reading. It has been prepared with direct reference to supplying a large circle of readers with a fund of practical information of an interesting nature, and of an instructive and elevating character. It has come to be true that information must be compactly given, if it is to be acceptable to any considerable number of people: it is believed that this volume furnishes, in an entertaining series of biographies in Part I, a chain of remarkable facts and events not heretofore grouped together, or otherwise accessible in any available form. With the decease of Prof. S. F. B. Morse, in April of the present year, culminated the career of the last one of less than a dozen men whose inventions and improvements have changed the industrial, commercial, and social relations of the world. In this work the lives of some of these men are given in nearly chronological order. A single unit only has been added to the column of centuries, beyond three years for grace, since Watt secured the first patent on his Condensing Engine; and not even a century has passed since Boulton and Watt became partners and began the manufacture of Steam-engines: now there are said to be engaged in the manufacturing and labor interests of Great Britain alone a hundred thousand of them, without mentioning Locomotives, or engines employed in navigation. Perhaps three times as many more Steam-engines are employed in other countries. The civilized world may fairly be said to tremble beneath the surging power and groaning thug of iron arms and sinews, propelled by steam. Excerpt from Two Boys and a Fortune or the Tyler Will Among all my books, this one will always occupy a particularly warm spot in my heart; for listen, read er, and I will let you into a little secret. Riddle Creek is really Ridley, and is a true-enough stream, flowing through one of the most charming regions in Dela ware County, Pennsylvania. The railroad trestle which plays such an important part in the first chapter forms a picturesque feature of the landscape, in full view of a home where I was wont to spend many a joyous holiday-time and which I had in mind whenever I mentioned the Pellery. Again, the odd little house on Seventh Street, Phila delphia, described in Chapter XXVII, actually existed until pulled down some years since to make room for a big manufacturing plant. I used to visit there every time I went to the Quaker City, and all the furnishings mentioned stand out vividly in my recollection to this day, even to the guitar off in one corner. I never played Fish Pond there, but I have eaten some of the best dinners I ever tasted in that famous kitchen below stairs, which had to serve for dining room as well. That kitchen and the great cat, who used to sun him self in the shop window, loom large in my memories of boyhood. Excerpt from A Master of Fortune The river came tumbling over the weir, with its summer waters all at play and foaming; and it was there, moved by the genius of the place, hanging by his left shoulder to the old punt moored out in the tumultuous stream, that the silent Carteret spoke words which amazed his friend. Excerpt from From Farm to Fortune: Or, Nat Nason's Strange Experience Nat Nason was a poor country boy with a strong desire to better his condition. Life on the farm was unusually hard for him, and after a quarrel with his miserly uncle, with whom he resided, he resolved to strike out for himself. Nat was poor and it was a struggle to reach the great city, where the youth trusted that fame and fortune awaited him. The boy obtained, by accident, a fair sum of money and with this he resolved to go into a business of some kind. But a sharper quickly relieved him of his wealth, and opened Nat's eyes to the fact that he was not as shrewd as he had thought himself to be. The lesson proved a valuable one, and from that moment the country boy did his best to not alone win success but to deserve it. He worked hard, often in the midst of great difficulties, and what the outcome of his struggle was, will be found in the pages which follow.
