A FINANCIAL TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR One of our most scintillating public intellectuals explores the political paradoxes of the pandemic and helps us think our way through it 'We are able to imagine anything because we are being besieged by something that was considered unimaginable...' Beneath the panic and bluster, beneath the confusing speeches and the conflicting advice, the Coronavirus pandemic acted, changing our world in the most profound ways. The tragic human cost and the economic devastation will be assessed and calculated for decades to come. But the pandemic also changed things in ways that are less easily expressed and understood. It has made bare the frayed contradictions of modern life. It has distorted things that seemed simple and settled. It has affirmed plain, uncomfortable truths. In this brilliant, thought-provoking essay, Ivan Krastev, one of our most interesting thinkers today, explores the pandemic's immediate consequences and conceives of its long-term legacy. Will things be different for the communities most harmed, and for those who escaped the worst? Where are we now with the US and China, with the UK and Europe? And how do we think our way through the unthinkable?

"The Corona crisis and the Need for a Great Reset" is a guide for anyone who wants to understand how COVID-19 disrupted our social and economic systems, and what changes will be needed to create a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable world going forward. Thierry Malleret, founder of the Monthly Barometer, and Klaus Schwab, founder and executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, explore what the root causes of these crisis were, and why they lead to a need for a Great Reset.Theirs is a worrying, yet hopeful analysis. COVID-19 has created a great disruptive reset of our global social, economic, and political systems. But the power of human beings lies in being foresighted and having the ingenuity, at least to a certain extent, to take their destiny into their hands and to plan for a better future. This is the purpose of this book: to shake up and to show the deficiencies which were manifest in our global system, even before COVID broke out.

An ode to life! Life is a very funny phenomenon. One can live it in one continuum. Or one can live it in phases. Or one can live it in ups and downs, highs and lows.It is entirely upon how one wishes to live it. This book is more autobiographical and less management jargon. It is best read as a continuum, for as far as I know Darshan, he is living it as one. The truth lies in each word he says as he has been there, done that, learnt this and experienced that. This comes from someone who has possibly gone through more vicissitudes of a single life than most of us can ever imagine. Yet he seems to have no serious grudge but instead moves on as tomorrow is a fresh dawn. I have personally learnt a lot from Darshan in his various roles as consultant, mentor, ideator, creator and friend over the years. And the lasting impression I carry is of a man calm and smiling. Not as if to accept the present, but because he is planning for a better future. This book is more like a novella and less like 14 individual chapters. That will help the reader arrive at the bigger picture that Darshan wishes to paint for all of us. The bigger picture is about accepting ourselves with our vulnerabilities as much as our strengths. It is about failing as much as about succeeding. It is about exploring as much as about mastering. It is about restlessness as much as about stability. It is about teaching as much as about learning. When you see life as a large canvas, you cannot fill it with just a finite set of objects that you are familiar with. The canvas needs to have its fair share of intrigue and the unknown. "Trade your cleverness for bewilderment" as Rumi had said, and Darshan quotes. That to me is the essence of living a full life, for it is so precious. This book is about life after the pandemic than about how to survive it now.It is about how to prepare for the 'fresh dawn' as Darshan always does. It is about focusing on all that will help us not merely survive beyond the pandemic but embrace the world with open arms. I am reminded of an incident during World War II when the Allied forces were mapping bullet holes in the aircraft that returned to base to determine areas for reinforcements. The Romanian mathematician Abraham Wald, then teaching in Columbia University, asked them to focus instead on the aircraft that did not return and reinforce areas that had no bullet marks on the returning aircraft! We tend to suffer from a phenomenon called "survival deviation" where one focuses on things that have survived rather than on things that have not. This pandemic is teaching us many a lesson on focus, adaptability, empathy, adventurism, curiosity and celebration. As the famous cardiac surgeon Dr. Christiaan Barnard had said, "The business of living is the constant celebration of being alive". Dive right in. Foreword by Avik Chattopadhyay,Co-Founder Expereal, Columnist at Economic Times, Business World, Autocar India, MxM India, Fast Bikes and Mint.
