DOWNLOAD EBOOKA primary aim of the NATO Science Committee since its estab lishment in 1958 has been to· further international scientific co operation among scientists from the member countries of the Alliance. Almost all fields of basic science have received sub stantial support for the purposes of enhancing exchange of inform ation, providing opportunities for advanced instruction and collaborative research. Up to 1977, more than 10,000 fellowships have been awarded to allow scientists to complete their scientific education in another country and more than 1,500 joint research projects involving scientists in at least two different countries per project have been financed by the Committee. In addition, more than 800 advanced study institutes have been held under NATO auspices which have allowed more than sixty thousand scientists to get together to hear leading scientists lecture on advanced research topics on the frontier of research of many disciplines and to discuss the most recent results of their research activi ties. The Science Committee also identifies specific areas as deserving special encouragement or preferential support for limited periods. A variety of mechanisms - research grants, study visits, conferences, etc. - is utilized to stimulate greater international activity. This effort is embodied in several individual programmes, each guided by a special programme panel of internationally eminent experts. Air-sea interaction is one of these programmes.

Many new results were emerging at the time, i.e., results from the MARSEN, MASEX, MILDEX, and TOWARD field projects (among others) were in the process of being reported and/or published. Further, a series of new experiments such as FASINEX and HEXOS were soon to be conducted in which new strides in our knowledge of air-sea fluxes would be made. During the year following the discussions with David Larner, it became apparent that many of the advances in air-sea interaction theory during the 1970s and 1980s were associated with sponsor investments in satellite oceanography and, in particular, remote sensing research. Since ocean surface remote sensing, e.g., scatterometry and SAR, requires intimate knowledge of ocean surface dynamics, advances in remote sensing capabilities required coordinated research in air-sea fluxes, wave state, scattering theory, sensor design, and data exploitation using environmental models. Based on this interplay of disciplines, it was decided that this book be devoted to air sea interaction and remote sensing as multi-disciplinary activities.

It focuses on two properties that various different wave phenomena have in common, the "nonlinearity" and "dispersion", and explains them in a style that is easy to understand for first-time students. Both of these properties have important effects on wave phenomena. Nonlinearity, for example, makes the wave lean forward and leads to wave breaking, or enables waves with different wavenumber and frequency to interact with each other and exchange their energies. Dispersion, for example, sorts irregular waves containing various wavelengths into gentler wavetrains with almost uniform wavelengths as they propagate, or cause a difference between the propagation speeds of the wave waveform and the wave energy. Many phenomena are introduced and explained using water waves as an example, but this is just a tool to make it easier to draw physical images. Most of the phenomena introduced in this book are common to all nonlinear and dispersive waves. This book focuses on understanding the physical aspects of wave phenomena, and requires very little mathematical knowledge. The necessary minimum knowledges about Fourier analysis, perturbation method, dimensional analysis, the governing equations of water waves, etc. are provided in the text and appendices, so even second- or third-year undergraduate students will be able to fully understand the contents of the book and enjoy the fan of nonlinear wave phenomena without relying on other books.

The book covers the fundamental properties of nonlinear waves in solid state materials, dealing with both theory and experiment. The underlying unity of the theory for linearized waves is already well-established, with the importance of such universal concepts as group velocity and wave superposition. For nonlinear waves the last few decades have seen the emergence of analogous unifying comcepts.
