A machine incorporating a set of reciprocating plates was built to mechanically aline wood flakes in the manufacture of particle board. Evaluation included the effect of plate spacing, vibrational amplitude, and frequency on the maximum feed rate of nine particle types. The variables of plate spacing and free fall distance were considered in determining extent of alinement. Several methods of measuring flake alinement were compared and physical properties of particleboards were related to degree of flake alinement.
