Excerpt from Fire and Frost: The Meadow Lea Tragedy The historian or novelist has just as great a field for service, and should he pass over what should be passed down to posterity as a national heritage, his vision of duty and service must be regarded defective in a degree proportionate with the worthiness of the cause or the gran deur of the opportunity. The Meadow Lea disaster is an event which might be regarded as one that had passed into history without having been accorded the treat ment which this intense tale of suffering, sor row, and heroism deserved at the hand of the historian. Excerpt from Frost and Fire, Natural Engines, Tool-Marks and Chips, Vol. 1: With Sketches Taken at Home and Abroad by a Traveller It is argued that every natural engine must also have some motive power, beyond which is the will of Him who said "Let there be light." The aim of this book is to show that where light shines, there also force radiates; and there forms result from movements caused by ray-force, or by light. That is the sum of the whole; but to reach that point is a long stage in an endless journey. The start is always the worst stage. A plan must be laid, and luggage packed to suit the plan and fit available space, if things are to go smoothly after the start. If a traveller means to write as he goes, the means ought to be in a special pocket; if he wants to smoke while he writes, he should have baccy and lights handy. "Tobacco comforteth the spirits and dischargeth weariness," as the sage Lord Bacon sagely remarked. If the wanderer means to sketch, the tools ought to be in their own waterproof bag; if he means to shoot and fish for sport or for livelihood, gun and gear should be together, rods and tackle in a separate bundle. If there is to be a civilised camp, a tent should travel, with bed, poles, pegs, and strings, ready for use. The camp-kettle ought to be a small pantry and kitchen-range in a bucket, ready to cook and to serve up food, to be caught, killed, and dressed, with rod and gun, wood and water, by the way.
