Have you gone through challenging times, wondering where to turn? In those difficult times in life, God has been my hope. As a small boy, I learned that God is always with us. And I sensed God's presence not only in church but also in the family, and, later, in friendships and marriage. Meditating on the scripture, The Healing of a Paralytic (Luke 5:17-26), I saw myself in the different characters in that scripture during life: a Pharisee, judging others, someone in the crowd, observing and listening, and many times being one of the men carrying the paralytic on the stretcher. During the crises of life, I was the paralytic on the stretcher, including both figuratively and literally during the largest single crisis of my life--my nine-month ordeal with COVID-19, going to death's door and back! It was others who carried me on that stretcher, and I saw God's hope through those that were there to carry me. Whether it was the woman I hadn't known before, tapping me on the shoulder asking how my mother was doing and telling me she was praying for her, to an entire church in Bloomingburg, praying for her, and, many years later, for me when I was in the grips of COVID-19, God's hope shines through people. I will be eternally grateful to all the women and men in the medical field, many of them are in this book, and some who I may never know their names. They were and continue to be God's vessels of hope for me. As are the many who prayed, locally, around the country, and the world. With joy upon my return home, Dr. Gulati, my local doctor declared it "nothing short of a Christmas miracle."

2020, the year of the Corona Virus Pandemic, a year that brought us all to our knees with its darkness and despair. It was truly a year of separation, sickness, sadness, and sorrow. It was a time that brought us all together in unity without the hugs and kisses that we all so desperately needed, instead we smiled with our eyes and said hello with an elbow nudge. We became Masked Covid Warriors to show we cared. This was a time in Crisis that rocked and plagued the entire world. The entirety of this book, however, is not just about the Pandemic. The main topic is about finding Hope in all Crises encompassed with my personal, devastating journeys, and how I got through them. It is important to note, this is not a book about doom and gloom. To the contrary, it is about finding Hope in pain, Light in darkness, the enabler of peace during tribulation and discovering the joy that awaits on the other side, irregardless of the nature of the Crisis.

Can God be good when life is not? Rediscover faith in the character, power, and presence of God. Even in the questions. Even in the hurt. "I want to believe, I want to have hope, but . . ." Pastor and bestselling author Craig Groeschel hears these words often and has asked them himself. We want to know God, feel his presence, and trust that he hears our prayers, but in the midst of great pain, we may wonder if he really cares about us. Even when we have both hope and hurt, sometimes it's the hurt that shouts the loudest. In Hope in the Dark, Groeschel explores the story of the father who brought his demon-possessed son to Jesus, saying, "I believe! Help my unbelief!" In the man's sincere plea, Jesus heard the tension in the man's battle-scarred heart. He healed not only the boy but the father too, driving out the hopelessness that had overtaken him. He can do the same for us today. As Groeschel shares his pain surrounding the health challenges of his daughter, he acknowledges the questions we may ask in our own deepest pain: "Where was God when I was being abused?" "Why was my child born with a disability?" "Why did the cancer come back?" "Why are all my friends married and I'm alone?" He invites us to wrestle with such questions as we ask God to honor our faith and heal our unbelief. Because in the middle of your profound pain, you long for authentic words of understanding and hope. You long to know that even in overwhelming reality, you can still believe that God is good. Hope in the Dark is also available in Spanish, Esperanza en la Oscuridad.

At the moment of his greatest professional success, vetteran newspaperman & author of this book was struck by a crippling depression. Neither psychotherapy nor Prozac helped him, & it wasn't until he began a painful probe of his life & an investigation into depression's larger issues that he saw a way out. Not a depression memoir, Finding Hope in the Age of Melancholy uses the author's personal experience to launch a profound & inspiring exploration of the depression epidemic in our society. Weaving literature, philosophy, economics, religion, & medicine into a discussion about the roots of our barren culture, the author comes to provocative conclusions. He shows how the nature of our society is often as much to blame for depression as brain chemistry is, how depression can be a positive goad to creativity & deeper self-understanding, & why religious belief & community involvement are often more potent therapies than drugs & the analyst's couch. This is a deeply helpful & illuminating book for all who are looking for meaning in their lives

A philosophical memoir about becoming a father in an increasingly terrible world – can I hope the child growing in my partner's womb will have a good-enough life? For Kant, philosophy boiled down to three key questions: “What can I know?”, “What ought I do?”, and “What can I hope for?” In philosophy departments, that third question has largely been neglected at the expense of the first two – even though it is crucial for understanding why anyone might ask them in the first place. In Infinitely Full of Hope, as he prepares to become a father for the first time, the philosopher Tom Whyman attempts to answer Kant’s third question, trying to make sense of it in the context of a world that increasingly seems like it is on the verge of collapse. Part memoir, part theory, and part reflection on fatherhood, Infinitely Full of Hope asks how we can cling to hope in a world marked by crisis and disaster.
