This book has emerged out of our long-time research interests on the topic of latex film formation. Over the years we have built up a repertoire of slides used in conference presentations, short courses and tutorials on the topic. The story presented in this book has thereby taken shape as it has been told and re-told to a mix of academic and industrial audiences. The book presents a wide body of work accumulated by the polymer colloids community over the past five decades, but the selection of examples has been flavoured by our particular experimental interests and development of mathematical models. We intend the book to be a starting point for academic and industrial scientists beginning research on latex film formation. The emphasis is on fundam- tal mechanisms, however, and not on applications nor on specific effects of formu- tions. We hope that the book consolidates the understanding that has been achieved to-date in the literature in a more comprehensive way than is possible in a review article. We trust that the reader will appreciate the fascination of the topic.

Fourteen papers cover three areas of film formation: Aspects of film formation mechanism, film property development in thermoplastic and crosslinkable systems, and the morphology and film structure of the resulting films. Advanced instrumental measurements are used to define morphology and determine unique film structures as well as to provide input into models of the film formation process.

Thin film mechanical behavior and stress presents a technological challenge for materials scientists, physicists and engineers. This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the major issues and topics dealing with stress, defect formation, surface evolution and allied effects in thin film materials. Physical phenomena are examined from the continuum down to the sub-microscopic length scales, with the connections between the structure of the material and its behavior described. Theoretical concepts are underpinned by discussions on experimental methodology and observations. Fundamental scientific concepts are embedded through sample calculations, a broad range of case studies with practical applications, thorough referencing, and end of chapter problems. With solutions to problems available on-line, this book will be essential for graduate courses on thin films and the classic reference for researchers in the field.

This book focuses on characterization of organic coatings by different testing methods and understanding of structure formation and materials properties. The knowledge of protective organic coatings and current test methods is based largely on empirical experience. This book aims at explaining the coating property changes during film drying and curing in terms of chemical and physical transformations. Current test methods are reviewed with emphasis on understanding their physical basis and expressing the test results in terms of comparable physical quantities. In general, this book provides readers a deeper understanding of the binder design, coating film formation process, properties build-up, appearance and defect formation, and automotive paint application. It also suggests manifold ways to improving the coatings performance. This book is designed for coating professionals to gain deeper understanding of characterization techniques and to select the right ones to solve their coating problems. It is ideal for both experienced and early career scientists and engineers. Also, it is useful for graduate students in the general area of protective coatings.

Modern plating technology is highly advanced, and has developed to cover a wide range of applications. In addition to the traditional use for surface finishing, plating technology can now offer novel processes to fabricate high-performance films or fine microstructural bodies in the microelectronics industry. This rapid progress reflects the potential for the electroplating plating method to become one of today's leading-edge technologies. This book will introduce a concept of a Microstructure Control Theory for plated films, describe and discuss various experimental results that support the theory, and finally, present a collection of experimental data on 53 types of plated metal/alloy systems with a special emphasis on their microstructure. The unique feature of this database is that most of the plating baths are simple and contain no additives. In addition, amorphous materials were used as substrates to avoid the effects of substrate structure, and single-crystal substrates were chosen to study the epitaxial growth phenomenon.* Contains a comprehensive database for the microstructure of plated films* The book is very logically structured with a very detailed contents which makes finding information easy* The book gives a very good overview of the research and development in this field and each chapter is fully referenced

Computations, Glassy Materials, Microgravity and Non-Destructive Testing is a compilation of the papers presented during the Third IUMRS International Conference on Advanced Materials International Union of The Materials Research Societies that discussed the concepts and methods behind glassy materials. The book is divided into parts. Part 1 tackles the progresses in sol-gel science and technology; the reaction mechanisms of ormosils and effects of ultrasonic irradiation; and the preparation of different glasses and their properties. Part 2 covers topics such as the neural network system for the identification of materials; the use of computers for simulations of many-body systems; computer system for meeting the supercomputing needs of materials; quality control of materials information by knowledge base; and the development of knowledgebase system for computer-assisted alloy design. Part 3 deals with the properties of different materials, the concepts, and the techniques behind them, and Part 4 discusses the non-destructive evaluation. The text is recommended for chemists and engineers in the field of materials science, especially those who wish to know more about the progress in its field of research.
