Excerpt from Fifty-First Report of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the Commonwealth: Returns of Libels for Divorce, and Returns of Deaths Investigated by the Medical Examiners, for the Year 1892 The rule adopted last year in response to a general and reasonable demand, voiced through the press and otherwise, for a reduction in the volume of the annual reports which form what is known as the Public Document Series, is again applied in the present report; that is, to restrict the exhibition of tab ular results to such as are plainly of practical utility within the meaning of the statute by authority of which the tables are prepared. The report is again edited by francis A. Harris, M.D., and especial care has been exercised to secure the greatest pos sible freedom from errors. Excerpt from Fifty-Fourth Report of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the Commonwealth: Returns of Libels for Divorce, and Returns of Deaths Investigated by the Medical Examiners, for the Year 1895 I have the honor to submit herewith, as required by law, the fifty-fourth Annual Registration Report, relating to the births, marriages, and deaths occurring in Massachusetts and registered in the several cities and towns during the year ending Dec. 31, 1895; and containing, also, the reports relating to libels for divorce in the several counties, and the returns of deaths, the causes and manner of which have been investigated by the medical examiners during the year 1895. The exactness of the data for calculation furnished in the State census year permits the introduction of a number of tables some of \which have been discontinued for the past four years on account of the varying estimates of population upon which the results of tabulations must have been based. Excerpt from Fifty-Second Report of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the Commonwealth: Returns of Libels for Divorce, and Returns of Deaths Investigated by the Medical Examiners, for the Year 1893 In this report the facts obtained by a review of the statistics are stated concisely, and the comparisons made are similar to those [made in former reports, without the publication of masses of figures which inspection has shown to be not wholly free from error. The size of the report for the year 1895 will undoubtedly be much larger, and contain many more tables of comparative statistics. It may be fairly said, however, that the reduction of the size of the report in the non-census years has commended itself to the people of the State. To any one unfamiliar with the work of the preparation of a report like this, the difficulty of a complete avoidance of error would seem almost incredible; yet this difficulty is attested by most if not all of the former registration reports. It may be said of the report for the year 1893 that the figures and com parisons have been made with the greatest care, and that they have been reviewed by an able and experienced statistician wholly familiar with vital statistics, and it is hoped that the report is free from error. The same care was exercised in the report for 1892, yet in spite of it the editor is obliged to admit the discovery of two slight errors after the report was issued. These errors are corrected in the report for this year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Fiftieth Annual Report of Births, Marriages and Deaths in the Commonwealth: Returns of Libels for Divorce, and Returns of Deaths Investigated by the Medical Examiners, for the Year 1891 The following observations upon the Births, Marriages and Deaths registered in Massachusetts in the year 1891 are in tended to render the understanding of the statistics compiled in the office of the Secretary of State somewhat easier of com prehension by the average reader, and afford him a ready comparison between the statistics of this and preceding years without the trouble and inconvenience of searching for himself; in fact, to comply with the provisions of section 15, chapter 32 of the Public Statutes, which requires the Secretary of State to prepare from the returns such tabular results as will render them of practical utility. This is in accordance with the custom of previous reports. It is not intended, however, in this report to present all the elaborate tables heretofore presented, where data are arrived at by an unending series of sums in long division and by per mutations and combinations of figures, which data are, if to any one, of value only to the statistician who might well him self devote the time and labor necessary to ascertaining the facts desired.
