Excerpt from Fifty-First Report of Births, Marriages, and Deaths in the Commonwealth; Returns of Libels for Divorce, and Returns of Deaths Investigated by the Medical Examiners: For the Year 1892 The following observations upon the statistics of the Births, Marriages and Deaths registered in Massachusetts in the year 1892, together with some comments on the Statistics of Divorce and the Returns Of the Medical Examiners, are intended to set forth the principal points of interest derived from a study of the figures, and to show some comparisons between the statistics of the year 1892 and those of other years, and to render these statistics if possible of practical utility. In the report for the year 1891 an attempt was made to respond to a popular demand for a reduction in the size of many of the public docu ments, and some tables which seemed superfluous were omitted from the first part of the report, and many tables were dropped from the editorial summary because not only was their practical utility problematical, but they were also to a large extent repetitions of matter which had been published year after year. The facts Obtained by a review of the statistics were stated concisely and the comparisons made were similar to those made in former reports without the publication of masses of figures which inspection showed to be not wholly free from error. This condensation of the report, however, was in no wise due to a desire on the editor's part to shirk labor, inasmuch as it must be apparent to any. One familiar with such matters that it required all the work necessary for the preparation of a table to state the simple fact that the table might have shown if pre sented for analysis.
