Excerpt from Fertilizing Deciduous Fruit Trees in California The significance in the fertilizer program of this scarcity of roots in the surface soil, even where roots have not been destroyed by cultivation, becomes evident when one considers the fixation of fertilizers by the soil. Most soils can fix - that is, remove from the soluble condition - certain substances commonly used for fertilizers. Potassium (potash) is so fixed. Even on light soils whose fixing power is less than that of heavy soils, large applications of potassium are necessary for penetration into the root zone. Phosphate, even when supplied in large quantities, may also be fixed by the soil. And, as will be discussed later, ammonia is fixed in the same way as potassium.' Excerpt from 1903-'04, San Dimas Citrus Nurseries The destination of this shipment of California-grown Washing ton Navel orange trees is suggestive. For instanee, Sicily has a population of about and among her exports the orange and the lemon represent an annual value of the town of Messina has a population of some and exports citrus fruits to the value of and the essence of or ange, lemon, and Bergamot in the sum of Naples has half a million population, and exports worth of fruit; Sicilia, Which is the largest island in the Mediterranean, grows much fruit'in the warm and sheltered sections. Think of California Washington Navel trees nodding to the breeze in the presence of Mt. Etna, or casting their fragrance on the summer air on the historic ground where N ero fiddled and saw Rome burn, and Where Hannibal exercised his prowess as a warrior in the Punic wars. The exports of citrus fruits from Italy also afford a study in supply and demand. From them it can clearly be seen that citrus culture in this country is far from being overdone; quite to the contrary, it is only in the formative period. But to consider that California, the youngest citrus-producing country, should be ex porting citrus trees to the oldest, is certainly a compliment to our advanced methods. We believe that Mr. Teague can justly be considered the pioneer in this sort of enterprise, as he has re cently filled orders for South Africa, Australia, and other equally distant points. This not only affords a solace to our pride as a horticultural people, but gives strength to the conviction that our advantages are unequalled. - [from The Pomona Times.
