In the branch of Agricultural Engineering, especially in Farm Machinery and Power sector, there is a need for a book exclusively dealing with various concepts and their applications in transparent and clear manner. So, an effort has been made to prepare this book entitled "Concepts of Farm Machinery and Power" to meet the demand of students, teachers, RS. The book will be useful immensely to the students preparing for GATE examination in AG papers and also for JRF, ARS, IFS examinations. The chapters of the book deals with conceptual analysis of farm machineries, which are confusing and difficult to understand. It is expected that the theoretical as well as numerical analysis of this book will sharpenthe ingenious power of the readers and help them to solve problemsquickly. Moreover, many problems are solved in different ways, which will help the readers in understanding and applying the concepts properly. I am extremely grateful to my teachers Dr. Subrata Karmakar, Associate Professor, Dept. of Farm Machinery and Power, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya; Prof. Partha Sarathi Chattopadhaya, Professor, Dept. of Farm Machinery and Power, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya; Er. Ravi Reddy, Senior Technician, CFMTTI, Budni, M.P., and my B. Tech friends for their encouragement and kind cooperation. Sagacious suggestions and discrete criticism are welcome to improve the book further, so that it becomes more relevant and more beneficial to the readers in real terms. Finally, I envisage this attempt as an important step in removing hurdles in the path of popularization of Agricultural Engineering. I hope that it will fire imaginations and ability of many Agricultural Engineers in the profession to produce such innovative works in future. “Agricultural Engineering— galvanizing agriculture”.

This study reviews the evolution of agricultural mechanization, particularly tractors, in India. In doing so, it provides some rough indicators of the extent of mechanization (particularly the spread of tractor use) at different historical phases, emphasizing that India’s experiences up to 1990 are as important as the lessons since then. The paper highlights the growth of diverse patterns of custom-hiring service provision, as well as heterogeneity in the speed of mechanization growth across regions and agroecological zones. It also summarizes the evolution of key related policies in India that are likely to have affected tractor imports, supply, financing, manufacturing, and related inputs such as fuel and electricity.

Designed for the course on Farm Machinery for undergraduate students of Agricultural Engineering, the book deals with the field operations such as tillage, tillage machineries including seedbed refining machineries, sowings and planting machineries, weeding and interculture equipment. A variety of harvesting and threshing equipment for cereals and forage crop including recovery/handling of crop residue are also dealt with in detail. The book discusses machineries used for specialised crops like rice, potato and sugarcane which are the major crops grown in our country. A detailed procedure on estimation of operational cost of agricultural machineries find place in this text. Review questions, multiple choice questions and solved numerical problems are suitably placed at the end of each chapter, wherever required, to help students to check their knowledge and grasping of the subject. Efforts have been made to write this book conforming to the course curriculum to enable students to use this book as a text. The tools, implements or machineries have been described in a simple language supported with line diagrams and photographs for better understanding. The students will find this book valuable for their continuing education as well as for various competitive examinations. Besides B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering) students, the book is also beneficial for the students of Diploma in Agricultural Engineering and B.Sc. Agricultural Sciences for their paper on ‘Farm Machinery’.

Mechanization is a process of replacing biological sources of energy involving animal and human labour to mechanized sources of energy. Farm mechanization indicates the use of machines for conducting agricultural operations replacing the traditional methods which involve human and animal labour. In the period 2004-05 to 2011-12, robust growth in the secondary and tertiary sectors led to significant job creation in agriculture sector. Tractors and power tillers have been driving the farm mechanization in India. Tractor sales have grown at a CAGR of 9.0 % in Financial Year (FY) 05-15 to around 5.5 lakh tractors in FY15 (around 2.3 lakh in FY2005) whereas sales of power tillers have grown at a CAGR of 10.6% in FY2005 to 2015 to 48,000 power tillers in FY2015 (17,841 in FY2005). Farm mechanisation is a fuel to agriculture production now days. As several studies indicate the mechanisation not only reduced the drudgery of manual labour and it enables the efficient and judicious use of resources. The increased agricultural production and productivity over the decades is coupled with the farm power availability. High labour intensive crops have turned to low labour intensive crops by replacing the mechanical power, which also reduced the cost of production and improved quality of produce led to increased farmers income share.

This handbook provides a holistic overview of different aspects of energy management in agriculture with an orientation to address the sustainable development goals. It covers possible applications not only from a technical point of view, but also from economic, financial, social, regulatory, and political viewpoints. Agriculture is one of the most imperative sectors that contribute to the economy across different agro-ecologies of the universe with energy inputs in each stage of production, from making and applying chemicals to fueling tractors that lay seeds and harvest crops to electricity for animal housing facilities. The majority of agricultural research has focused on the use of input, production, and productivity, whereas rational energy budgeting and use remain an overlooked and likely underestimated segment, ignored so far while formulating agro-ecosystem framework. Energy management study is a new frontier of agriculture and is challenging duе to complex enterprises, spatial-temporal variability, exposure to pollution, and the predominant effect of the anthropogenic factor on ecology and environment. But it is worth taking the challenge considering the important prerequisite role of energy for sustainable development which has been evidenced from increasing research in recent times. Of recent origin, there are critical, in-depth studies around the globe assessing the capture and flow of energy in the ecosystem, which will help to develop a conceptual framework to incorporate this vital resource in the agriculture management template. This book is a state-of-the-art resource for a broad group of readers including a diversity of stakeholders and professionals in universities, public energy institutions, farmers and farming industry, public health and other relevant institutions, and the broader public as well.
