Tyrannosaurus Rex was taller than a modern day giraffe and measuring in at half the length of a small blue whale. Tyrannosaurus Rex measured up to 13m (42ft) in length, 4m (13ft) at the hip! The skull of a Tyrannosaurus Rex alone measured up to 1.5m (5ft) long. They weighed 8 tons (more than a garbage truck). Tyrannosaurus was cannibalistic. The calculations suggested that adult T. Rex could have generated from 35000 to 57000 newtons of force in the back teeth, or the equivalent of three times the force estimated for a great white shark, 15 times the force of an African lion, 3 1/2 times the force of an Australian saltwater crocodile and around 7 times the estimated force for Allosaurus. The average Tyrannosaurus Rex lived about 30 years. The first, fragmentary fossils of Tyrannosaurus Rex were discovered by the famous paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope in South Dakota in 1892. Tyrannosaurus Rex was named in 1905 by by Henry Fairfield Osborn. The largest specimen of Tyrannosaurus Rex nicknamed “Sue” was found in South Dakota in 1990. T. Rex probably had about 200 bones, roughly the same as us. T. rex was a relatively smart dinosaur. Although the ratio of brain size to body mass was very small for T. Rex, it was larger than most other dinosaurs. T. rex's brain was larger than the human brain, but the cerebrum (the part of the brain that we use to think) was tiny. T. Rex went extinct during the K-T mass extinction, about 65 million years ago. As you read this book over and over to your child it won't be long before they are the ones pointing to the picture and telling you what it is.
