Can you stomach the Fairgrounds? Based on nothing but a modern-day message in a bottle and a secret invention that can measure the ebb and flow of Karma itself, watch as three troubled strangers each takes a leap of faith to find fairness in an unfair world. But things get close and personal as a masked vigilante vows to take Karma into his own hands. But no matter what brought our band of less-than-merry men together, one thing is for certain, common enemies make for strange bedfellows! In Book 1, get acquainted with each of our three misunderstood adventurers as they independently try to make sense of a secret message embedded in a mysterious $2 bill. Who wrote the secret message, and can they be trusted? Each of our protagonists must face their inner conflicts and weigh the pros and cons of endeavoring on such a risky pilgrimage. Is it fate that guides these complete strangers towards a common destiny? Or is it simply a disaster waiting to happen, the wishful and wistful thinking wrought by the telltale imaginations of overzealous dreamers?

Connections: Four people with nothing in common. A young girl dreams of the fairground; a woman needs to quit smoking and a detective drinks too much as he listens to tales of dead men who walk. Dr Harrison waits in the dark place for a sign. He has little else to do having passed away over thirty years ago. Elsewhere, a hypnotist's light blinks its slow soporific beat in a darkened room off a Kings Cross back street and somewhere, in another world, a dead man shields his eyes from the glare. Connections: A journey that starts with a young girl's dreams and a young woman's hopes and finishes across time and across reality into the very darkest of wastelands. A place where demons walk and the light cannot exist and where a seven-year old girl, dressed only in pyjama's, must stand tall and fight for us all.

This prize-winning comic thriller takes readers “from high-octane gun antics to kitchen mopping in East Kilbride . . . [in] one beast of a story” (The Guardian, UK). International bestselling author Christopher Brookmyre has been lauded for his dark sense of humor and brilliant suspense plotting. Now his Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize–winning novel follows “his most ambitious heroine yet”: a forty-six-year-old house-proud grandmother (The Guardian, UK). As a teenager, Jane Bell had dreamt of playing in the casinos of Monte Carlo, surrounded by the likes of James Bond. But now her dreams are as dry as the dust her Dyson sucks up from her hall carpet. Her son Ross, a researcher for a Swiss arms manufacturer, is the one with the exciting life. But lately it’s gotten a bit too exciting. Ross needs to disappear before some shady characters force him to divulge the secrets of his research. And they’re not the only ones desperate to locate him. Ross’s firm has hired a team of security experts, and, headed by the enigmatic Bett, they have little in common apart from total professionalism and a thorough disregard for the law. Bett believes the key to Ross’s whereabouts is his mother, and in one respect, he is right. But even he is taken aback by her dogged determination to secure her son’s safety. The teenage dreams of fast cars, high-tech firepower, and extreme action had always promised to be fun and games, but in real life, it’s likely someone is going to lose an eye . . . “Funny, electric and captivating.” —Times (UK)

This book offers an extended consideration of the fairground showfront. It combines archival material, contemporary examples of fairs, and a sustained theoretical engagement with influential philosophies of surface, including recent work by Avrum Stroll and Andrew Benjamin, as well as the nineteenth century author Gottfried Semper. Semper’s work on the origin of architectural enclosure —formed from woven mats and carpets— anticipates the surface and material history of the showfront. Initial chapters introduce these philosophies, the evolution of showfronts, and the ways in which individual fairground rides and attractions are arranged to form an enclosing boundary for the whole fair. Later chapters focus on issues of spectacle and illusion, vast ‘interior’ spaces, atmosphere, crowds and surface effects. Informed by a wide range of work from other design and cultural studies, the book will be of interest to readers in these areas, as well as architecture and those curious about the fairground.

The fourth novel in Jerry Apps’s Ames County series, Cranberry Red brings the story into the present, portraying the challenges of agriculture in the twenty-first century. As the novel opens, Ben Wesley has lost his job as agricultural agent for Ames County. He is soon hired as a research application specialist for Osborne University, a for-profit institution that has developed “Cranberry Red,” a new chemical that promises not only to improve cranberry crop yields but also to endow the fruits with the power to prevent heart disease, reduce brain damage from strokes, and ward off Alzheimer’s disease. Ben must promote the new product to cranberry growers in Ames County and beyond, but he worries whether the promised results are credible. Was Cranberry Red rushed to market? When the chemical does all that the university claims it will do, Ben is relieved . . . until disturbing side effects emerge. Can he criticize Cranberry Red and safeguard farmers and consumers without losing his job, or will Ben’s honesty get him fired while his community continues to get sicker?
