This research work is on the analysis of factors affecting effective materials management in building construction projects. Having the right materials in the right place at the right time is important for effective execution of a building project. Secondary and primary data collected were subjected to statistical analysis through the use of multiple regressions. Six hypotheses were tested and the results show that significant relationship exist between the factors and effective materials management. It was recommended that organizations should incorporate materials management in the overall policy of the firms in order to eliminate some of these problems.

This study on the Evaluation of Materials Management Strategies in the Nigerian Construction Industry. Questionnaires were used to collect data from the construction participants. Main factors of materials management were summarized into five basic independent variables (X) namely; materials planning (x1), material procurement (x2), material handling (x3), material storage (x4) and material usage (x5). Six rating basic questions were asked and the numerical summation of the ratings formed the observed value for the independent variables in the case of that respondent. The same was applied in the assessment of state of material management as applicable to construction industry in Nigeria (Y) which formed the dependent variable.Multiple regression analysis was carried out on the data using E-view package and SPSS package and the following relationship was established between the dependent and independent variables.Y = 1.084452539 0.5702062292x1 - 0.114384169x2 0.3604260282x3 0.1852074864x4 - 0.266328778x5. Testing the hypothesis using absolute value of T-statistics and probability values show that among the factors studied, only two of them planning(x1) and handling (x3) were statistically established as being critical to materials management in construction projects delivery in Nigeria.Material planning and issuing system at sites should be automated in order to minimize human errors. Storage of materials should only be maintained at minimal level in construction sites.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 64.2, language: English, abstract: Management of materials has over the years been a great problem to most firms in the construction industry. In construction project operations, there is always a tendency of mismanagement of materials by construction firms. As the size of the contract increases, however, so does the scale of activities concerning materials management. The aim of this research was therefore to investigate into materials management problems faced by construction firms in the Greater Accra Region. To achieve this aim, the following objectives were set out: To identify the problems in materials management practices by greater Accra firms, to identify the causes of these materials management problems, to identify proper ways of managing materials by construction firms on sites and to suggest ways of solving materials management problems by construction firms. The research instrument adopted was the use of questionnaires. Fifty-five (55) sets of questionnaires was distributed to various contractors. The sampling technique adopted was the snowball sampling technique. Quantity analysis approach was adopted for the analysis of the data which involved the use of frequency distribution tables and charts. The analysis of the data revealed that high project cost and delay were also some of the effects of improper materials management. Provisions of standard storage facilities, delivery of materials to the site, were some of the factors that most construction firms considered prior to the commencement of works with regards to the storage of materials on site.

This study identifies and examines the factors influencing time and cost overruns on construction project in the south eastern Nigeria. The high level of dilapidation and deterioration of roads and other construction infrastructural facilities seen in this zone could be attributed to abysmal performance of construction project management. Survey technique with area and random sampling procedures were employed for the study. The primary data were obtained with the instrument of weighted scaled questionnaires the respondents to the questionnaire are clients, contractors and consultants from five states of south eastern Nigeria. A total of 110 and 42 hypothetical cost and time overruns respectively were identify for analysis. The methods of data analysis were spearman's rank correlation coefficient and Kendall's coefficient of concordance with the hypothesis tested at 5% level of significant so as to determine the degree of agreement amongst the parties. The results of this study have shown that the three parties to a project are in agreement that materials factor and external factor groups have indeed contributed immensely to delays on construction projects, while projects, contractor's responsibilities, consultant's responsibilities, client's responsibilities, professional management, design and documentation, execution, labour and equipment, contractual relationship, government relations, time overruns; cost overrun and all together (time and cost overruns) factors have not greatly influenced delays on construction projects. Based on these results it is recommended that client's, contractor's and consultant's should pay more attention to both material and external factors for there to be effective and efficient delivery on construction projects at the right time and cost.

This work presents a comprehensive treatment of the entire construction materials management process, examining the many cost tradeoffs between materials functions. It discusses how to manage construction materials efficiently by implementing measures such as data management, Total Quality Management, process control, electronic data interchange, and bar coding. This book delineates the real cost of materials management.;It is intended for: cost, materials, construction, project, civil and industrial engineers; cost estimators and controllers; and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.
