DOWNLOAD EBOOKThree general approaches were used to investigate the problem of horizontal stress measurement in cohesionless soil; theoretical solutions, finite element modeling and laboratory testing. The best theoretical solution to represent a soil stress cell measuring lateral stress is that for a rigid elliptical inclusion in an infinite, elastic, homogeneous, isotropic material. Finite element modeling of the Cornell Stress Cell using three-dimensional elements allowed the soil to be represented as a cross-anisotropic material which was not possible with the theoretical solution. Laboratory testing included air and soil calibrations of the stress cell, determination of the coefficient of horizontal soil stress at rest and constant volume direct shear tests. The results of this study show that lateral stress measurements can be performed successfully with soil stress cells but the behavior of the cells is different from that of a cell oriented to measure vertical stress.
