Extreme Attraction begins when a young man writes to an attractive newscaster and receives a positive response. At about this time an alluring bank teller pursues him and begins a romantic affair. Startled by the arrival of two attractive women into his life author Tom Fagan manifests a considerate character by setting the example for respectful treatment of women, putting their desires ahead of his own, proceeding with only what the women want, never acting against their free will. Within a few days the newscaster has her secretary call Tom and ask him what he wants to say, and the bank teller calls him and asks him what he wants to do. A twist of fate, losing some money orders, brings Tom and the bank teller together. At the same time the newscaster has the effect of reawakening Tom's creative powers so intensely that the beach in Belmont Shore turns into a table of ideas for writing. The transforming effect the two women have on Tom-the newscaster heightening his creative talents and the bank teller heightening his passion for kindness-form the basis for a revelation of the magnanimity that should accompany love.

Why do some people risk their lives regularly by placing themselves in extreme and challenging situations? For some, such as astronauts, the extreme environments are part of the job. For others, they involve the thrill and competition of extreme sports, or the achievement of goals such as being the first to reach the South Pole or climb Everest. Whether for sport or employment, all these people have made the personal choice to put themselves in environments in which there is significant risk. What drives such people? And what skills and personality traits enable the best to succeed? What abilities are shared by the successful mountaineer, astronaut, caver, or long-distance solo sailer? And are there lessons the rest of us can learn from them? The psychology of those who have to cope with extreme conditions has been a matter of much research. It is important, for example to those planning manned space programmes or the makeup of teams who will spend months in an isolated or hostile environment such as Antarctica, to understand the psychological pressures involved, and to recognize those best equipped to handle them. In Extreme, Emma Barrett and Paul Martin explore the challenges that people in extreme environments face, including pain, physical hardship, loneliness, and friction between individuals, and the approaches taken to overcome them. Using many fascinating examples and personal accounts, they argue that we can all benefit from the insights gained.

Experts address key issues—from attitudes and behaviors to harassment and homophobia—related to sexuality among college students. With essays by a wide range of knowledgeable contributors, Sex in College: The Things They Don't Write Home About draws on recent research to examine just about every aspect of its intriguing subject. The book begins with general chapters that offer historical, cross-cultural, and theoretical perspectives on college students' sexual attitudes and behaviors. One chapter offers a framework for understanding the unique developmental perspective of young adults. Another chapter explores the research methods used to study college students' sexual practices. Subsequent chapters cover: dating and intimacy on campus, the perspective of young adults about love, sexuality education and classes, and sexual orientation. The darker side of college sexuality is also examined in chapters centering on such topics as infidelity in college dating relationships, homophobia and sexual harassment on campus, sexual risk-taking and sexually transmitted infections, sexual problems and dysfunction among young adults, and sexual assault among college students.
