In the midst of the current crisis that is threatening to derail the historical project of European unification, Jürgen Habermas has been one of the most perceptive critics of the ineffectual and evasive responses to the global financial crisis, especially by the German political class. The period between 1917 and 1957, starting with the birth of the USSR and the American intervention in the First World War and ending with the Treaty of Rome, is of the utmost importance for contextualizing and understanding the intellectual origins of the European Community. During this time of 'crisis,' many contemporaries, especially intellectuals, felt they faced a momentous decision which could bring about a radically different future. The understanding of what Europe was and what it should be was questioned in a profound way, forcing Europeans to react. This book aims to provide an analysis of the EU’s crisis decade—from the euro crisis to the populist right parties’ resurgence and Brexit. The EU has encountered a series of crises since 2008 when the Greek sovereign debt crisis first broke out and brought forth the euro crisis. This was soon followed by the rise of anti-EU populist right parties, culminating in their unprecedented victory in the 2014 European Parliament Elections.
