The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is the only European Union agency focusing solely on gender equality. With substantial resources already collected and developed, EIGE is becoming the EU knowledge centre for gender equality. In 2017 we published the third edition of our Gender Equality Index. It is a unique measurement tool developed by EIGE. Individual scores given to every Member State and the EU as a whole make it easy to compare gender equality among countries. During the decade between 2005 and 2015, the Gender Equality Index of the EU only improved by 4 points. With 66.2 points for the EU as a whole and individual country scores ranging from 82.6 (Sweden) to 50 (Greece) there is plenty of room for improvement.

"Violence against women undermines women's core fundamental rights such as dignity, access to justice and gender equality. For example, one in three women has experienced physical and/or sexual violence since the age of 15; one in five women has experienced stalking; every second woman has been confronted with one or more forms of sexual harassment. What emerges is a picture of extensive abuse that affects many women's lives but is systematically underreported to the authorities. The scale of violence against women is therefore not reflected by official data. This FRA survey is the first of its kind on violence against women across the 28 Member States of the European Union (EU). It is based on interviews with 42,000 women across the EU, who were asked about their experiences of physical, sexual and psychological violence, including incidents of intimate partner violence ('domestic violence'). The survey also included questions on stalking, sexual harassment, and the role played by new technologies in women's experiences of abuse. In addition, it asked about their experiences of violence in childhood. Based on the detailed findings, FRA suggests courses of action in different areas that are touched by violence against women and go beyond the narrow confines of criminal law, ranging from employment and health to the medium of new technologies."--Editor.

The European Union now has its first Index, created by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), that gives a comprehensive measure of gender equality in the EU and Member States based on the EU policy framework. The Gender Equality Index will complement the work of the EU and MS in promoting and realising gender equality as one of the fundamental values of the EU and will provide evidence for future policy improvements. The Gender Equality Index shows that the European Union is only halfway towards a gender-equal society, with an average EU score of 54 (where 1 stands for no gender equality and 100 for full gender equality). This report is the final product of the Background study on the involvement of men in gender equality in the European Institute for Gender Equality's (EIGE) working areas. The study was commissioned by EIGE and implemented by Men for Gender Equality (Sweden). The general aim was to map relevant stakeholders in all EU Member States whose activity could be considered as contributing to a more effective involvement of men in the promotion of gender equality. Special attention was placed on specific approaches applied and materials produced by such actors. The study focused on the period between 2007 and 2010 and was carried out between April and July 2011. In addition, the research team analysed and provided commentary on the collected information and reflected on good practice examples.
