Excerpt from Essentials of Modern Chemistry In studying properties we distinguish between physical properties and chemical properties. Under physical prop etties are included color, odor, taste, solubility in water, hardness, density, conductivity of heat and electricity, tenacity, ductility, and malleability. Under chemical properties we include all chemical activity such as the interaction of the substance with water, air, acids, and alkalis. Excerpt from Essentials of Chemistry The authors have had exceptional opportunities to know the capacity of the average student and the train ing of the average teacher of science in secondary schools. They are fully aware of the limitations of these schools both as to laboratory equipment and as to the time which may reasonably be expected for the study of Chemistry. They have prepared the book with these limitations constantly in mind. A connected treatment of the descriptive matter of this work is attained by the division of the book into three parts: (1) the text proper; (2) the laboratory exercises the handbook. The text and the labora tory exercises are bound together; the handbook is in pamphlet form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Modern Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2: Systematic Chemistry Reference has already been made in Part I. To the different processes which may be used for the isolation of elements from their compounds. But there exists a group of elements, that of which the first member is helium, which form no com pounds, and which therefore are found only in a free state. It is, therefore, convenient to begin with these. The helium Group - These elements are all gases at the ordinary temperature of the atmosphere, and they are consequently all to be found in atmospheric air. They are colourless, even in the liquid condition, and are devoid of smell and taste. They are very sparingly soluble in water for example, 100 volumes of water dissolve only 4. 1 volumes of argon at Their preparation consists, first, in the separation of the other constituents of air from them, and. Excerpt from Chemistry for Young People After this general acquaintance is secured, the commoner elements are taken up, and the reader is told those more important. Facts about each which should be known, even to one who desires no ex pert knowledge of their qualities. After obtain ing such general knowledge of these elements, their qualities and their uses, the reader is led to enter a little more deeply into the greater principles that enable us to understand their action one upon an other, and to become acquainted with the Periodi cal Tables wherein the relations of all elements to one another is shown to depend upon their atomic weight. These relations include the subjects of valence, of atomic heat, and, generally, of chemical action as classified by modern chemists. To the enormous subject of organic chemistry, or the chemistry of carbon compounds, but one chapter is given; but in this are set forth such general laws and rules as enable the reader to comprehend the complexity of the subject and the methods by which chemists are able to make new compounds and to predict their qualities. After this general review of the subject, there follows a discussion of the history of chemistry and of its relation to human progress, which con tains, though in brief form, the important facts enabling young readers to know the importance of the part played by modern scientific chemistry in practical life. Then follows a set of tables which give in a complete way the essential facts in relation to all elements, thus completing those tables which in the earlier part of the book are confined to the more familiar elements. Excerpt from Modern Chemistry With Its Practical Applications In preparing this book for use in secondary schools, I have endeavored to look at the science from the viewpoint of the students themselves. The fault with many texts upon the same subject is that the position of the learner has been disregarded; the books have been encyclopaaedic; they have presented a great number of facts as a skeleton or framework, but this skeleton has not been clothed with muscle and animated with life. No more fascinating subject finds a place in the curricula of our secondary schools, yet to the average student chemistry is too often but an irksome task. In the present work I have omitted much that is often given in an elementary text, while at the same time entering more into that detail which gives lively interest to the subject. It has been my aim to show, whenever possible, the practical application of the science to the everyday affairs of life; in other words, to emphasize industrial and commercial chemistry. At the same time the fundamental principles of the science have not been forgotten; on the contrary, they have been emphasized even more than is usual in an elementary chemistry. This has been rendered possible by the omission of much that can never be either of interest or of value to the beginner. Recognizing the fact that science must be taught inductively by experiment, some authors have assumed that the student must gain all his knowledge of chemistry in this way. No greater mistake could be made. The science has been hundreds of years in reaching its present development, and much must be accepted by the student without any effort to work it out for himself.
