Excerpt from Essays, Tales, Etc IN bringing out a second edition of Essays, Tales, Etc, I have thought the opportunity favor able to add some other matter - Essays on Labour; Health versus Temperature; a few Tales; four Letters to the Mayor; Addresses on Early Closing, and Trade Protection; which I trust may find as much favor as those previously printed. The letters addressed to the Mayor, on the Sanitary Condition of Liverpool, whilst of local interest, still deals with the question of health of houses generally. It will be seen that the injury that is sustained by those who dwell in damp houses is enormous. I have thought it well to print these letters, as, possibly, likely to help the cause of sanitary progress, by provoking discussion. A Paper on National Banking, also, considers the question of panics, in relation to the Operation of the present Bank Act. At this time the subject is of no little interest to those engaged in commerce. All so occupied, -may reasonably be asked to well consider a question on which public Opinion will, some day or other, have to pronounce its judgment. Excerpt from Fire and Frost: Stories, Dialogues, Satires, Essays, Poems, Etc The contents of this volume include a number of stories and essays, etc., which have been written by the author at irregular intervals during the last few years, and some of which have already been published in periodical form - some of the stories in Saturday the essays in the Week - the earliest in point of date being the essays, the majority of which were written several years ago. The essay on d'arcy mcgee (an Exile from Erin) appeared in the World. Owing to the exigencies of space these essays have been abbreviated in the present volume, and for the same reason it has been im possible to insert the Scenes and Spirit Songs from Azrael, originally intended for publication in this volume. To the best of my knowledge, certainly of my endeavour, I have respected the rights of others in expressing my ideas upon subjects of which many may form a different conception to that under which 1 have treated them; and on this consideration, and the circumscrihing circumstances of my position, I respectfully hog to claim the right of acting in my own way, in reference to any opposition which any of theideas contained in this volume may possibly awaken: it will only be through failure of means, or strength, or ability, if I do not give to everything sooner or later the answer which may be its due. The diffusion of population hindered the public school. The fertility of soil and climate lessened the necessity for labor; while the paradox of slavery em thralled the intellectual life of the people, prevented centralization in community life, destroyed the inspiration to literary labor, and in the apprehension of im pending danger to the cherished institution, swept every vital brain as an eager volunteer into the open and tempting arena of politics.
