To the best of my knowledge, certainly of my endeavour, I have respected the rights of others in expressing my ideas upon subjects of which many may form a different conception to that under which 1 have treated them; and on this consideration, and the circumscrihing circumstances of my position, I respectfully hog to claim the right of acting in my own way, in reference to any opposition which any of theideas contained in this volume may possibly awaken: it will only be through failure of means, or strength, or ability, if I do not give to everything sooner or later the answer which may be its due. Society and the majority have their rights. Which theminority and, the individual are bound to holdsacred and, on the other hand, the minority and the individual have their rights, which the majority and society are equally bound to respect, in this country at least, whose greatness is based upon the supremacy of the individual conscience and the right of private judgment, Numbers may vote majorities, but cannot by them alone vote truth. I do not know that I have moroto say, except to bid my friends farewell, and. Again thank them for their kind encouragement - May peace abide within their walls, and prosperity within their habihttions l I do not think we shall soon meet (ia print, at least) again.
