DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Six Contemporary Novels: Six Introductory Essays in Modern Fiction Here his account breaks off - and for us the novel begins, with the consideration of method. What is Lawrence Durrell's method, his way of handling the particular novelistic stomach-pump with which he extracts the poisons of the past? And how important is this method and how successful his handling of it? We have the au thor's own comment here as a pointer, given in an additional, and longer, note which prefaces the second volume of the series, Modern literature offers us no Unities, so I have turned to science and am trying to complete a four-decker novel whose form is based on the relativity proposition. Three sides of space and one of time constitute the soup-mix recipe of a continuum. The four novels follow this pattern. DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis is a reprint of the collection of essays originally published in book form in 1910. The first impression the book makes, on re-reading its interesting and at times brilliant criticisms, is the ever changing meaning of the word "modern." We are sure that if Professor Phelps were issuing such a book to-day, his choice of subjects would differ, both in omission and inclusion, from the list as here given. De Morgan, Bjornson, Sienkiewicz, and Blackmore would probably disappear, and those who could take their places would more than fill the volume. For, to mention only one, the greatest of "modern novelists," Mrs. Wharton, is not here, although The House of Mirth was published in 1905. Professor Phelps gives sound and discriminating criticism on Hardy, Howells, Mark Twain, Stevenson, Kipling, and Sudermann. He does not, we think, appreciate Mrs. Humphry Ward's portrayal of the atmosphere in which she places her characters, but he puts his finger on her weaknesses. He rightly protests against the Continental criticism of English and American novels on account of their reticence, for it is not a question of morality only, it is a question of the proper proportions in which one draws life. An interesting appendix contains his plea for the study of contemporary literature and an account of his experiences when he began to give a course on "The Modern Novel" at Yale about 1896. We remember the surprise we felt at that time, when this course was hailed as a great novelty, for we had taken a course in modern fiction at Pennsylvania with Professor Schelling several years before; but this essay, read now, proves again how fast time flies. Courses in modern literature are given everywhere now, and Professor Phelps can rightly be congratulated on being one of the pioneers in bringing trained academic judgment where it is vitally needed, that is, to the reading public who have to be told constantly what they should or should not read. -Educational Review, Vol. 64

DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Great English Novelists, Vol. 1: With Introductory Essays and Notes From the modern standpoint a detail has no value unless it contributes something to the total dénouement of the plot. A novelist proves himself an artist by his ability to discriminate between those incidents and statements which hasten and strengthen, or delay and weaken the crisis. Yet this over-elaboration of detail, to the end that fiction may wear the appearance of truth, is to this day the be setting sin of the realist. Christie Murray has pointed out the inclination to errors of this sort in the novels of George Moore. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Essays on Modern Dramatists I have not selected these dramatists because I believe them to be exclusively the best, but because I chose to write about them. Their work interests me, and they are modern. Four of them are alive, and the other two ought to be. The last thirty years will probably be regarded by future historians as a great creative period in the drama. Perhaps contemporary criticism gains in intimacy what it loses in authority. If some of the Elizabethans had only written less about Seneca, and more about Shakespeare! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
