Esophageal anomalies and disorders in infancy and childhood include a wide spectrum of different diseases. These range from emergencies immediately after birth such as esophageal atresia (EA), necessitating an experienced team of neonatologists and pediatric surgeons, up to gastro-esophageal reflux disease in elder children, necessitating the pediatric gastroenterologist and visceral surgeon. In the last few years some fascinating pediatric surgical techniques have evolved, such as the thoracoscopic correction of EA or the FOKER technique for elongation in cases of long-gap, EA. Prof. Foker has developed this special traction technique and is the world's leading expert in long-gap EA.

Neurogastroenterology is devoted to "study the interface of all aspects of the digestive system with the different branches of the nervous system". Over the past 15 years advances in this field has greatly improved our understanding in primary functional and motility disorders in children. Neurogastroenterology has also begun to revolutionize our vision of "organic" diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, diabetes as well as microbial-host interactions. Major advances have also been achieved during these years in the knowledge of mechanisms of development of the enteric nervous system at the molecular level allowing a better understanding of diseases related to developmental anomalies and opening perspectives to new treatments with stem cells. Pediatric Neurogastroenterology: Gastrointestinal Motility and Functional Disorders in Children is dedicated to report the most accurate and recent knowledge in the field. Written by the world-renown experts, the book covers the field by providing a comprehensive and up-to-date review and practical guide to pediatric gastrointestinal motility and functional disorders for pediatricians, pediatric gastroenterologists, adult gastroenterologists and all professionals involved in the treatment of children with such disorders.

In 1968 the first contacts were arranged with the publishing house of Urban & Schwarzenberg concerning the establishment of a periodical to be produced in English with the aim of publishing important scientific work in pediatric surgery and related disciplines. I thought especially of certain excellent inaugural disser tations and theses. When Urban & Schwarzenberg promised to start such a series, I recruited Peter Rickham, then in Liverpool and now in Zurich, and Jean Prevot of Nancy as executive editors. We chose the title Progress in Pediatric Surgery - Fortschritte del' Kinderchirurgie - Acquisitions en Chirurgie Enfantile as the name of our new series. The first volume was published in 1970, followed by another 16 volumes during the next 14 years. At the suggestion of Michael Urban, we turned from the publication of long papers to theme-based volumes, which proved to be extraordinarily useful. Mr. Urban, the head of Urban & Schwarzenberg, told us in 1982 that his firm could no longer look after Progress in Pediatric Surgery. With the agreement of Mr. Urban, we had to look for another' publisher and found Springer-Verlag, who agreed to continue publishing Progress in Pediatric Surgery in the approved lay-out. We cordially thank Dietrich G6tze of Springer-Verlag for his helpful support. This volume (No. 18) is the first of Progress in Pediatric Surgery to appear under the guidance of Springer-Verlag. We want to express our thanks to Mr. Urban and Dr.
