‘Thinking like a poor person will keep you poor. Thinking like a wealthy person will make you wealthy. I would like to show you exactly what the differences between the two ways of thinking are and how you can use them in your favour.’ – Douglas Kruger - Douglas Kruger Being rich is not normal: most people never achieve wealth in their lifetime. The very word ‘rich’ describes a state beyond the median, and therein lies an important lesson. To become rich, you will have to think radically differently from the way most people around you think. Do you know what those specific differences may be? Business and wealth guru Douglas Kruger strips away the feel-good hype and gets right down to the practical principles. He leads you through the types of thinking that hold individuals, families and businesses in generational cycles of poverty. He explores the dramatically different approaches of the self-made rich and super-rich, showing you which behaviours to begin practising and which behaviours are traitorous to your wealth potential. Escape poverty. Raise your value. Change the trajectory of your story. It all begins with the way you think.

Why does poverty persist? A critical, but so far ignored, part of the answer lies in the fact that poverty is regularly created. Large numbers of people are escaping poverty, but large numbers are concurrently falling into chronic poverty. This book presents the first large-scale examination of the reasons why people fall into poverty and how they escape it in diverse contexts. Drawing upon personal interviews with 35,000 households in different parts of India, Kenya, Uganda, Peru, and the United States, it takes you on an illustrative journey, filled with facts, analyses, and the life stories of people who fell into abject poverty and others who managed to escape their seemingly predetermined fates. Letting a farmhand's son or daughter remain a farmhand, even though she or he is potentially the next Einstein, is a tragedy that poor people witness time after time. Remedying this situation is crucial for making poverty history. This book addresses how equal opportunity can be promoted and how slum-born millionaires can arise in reality. Speaking to Barack Obama's message for more effective health care, One Illness Away feeds directly into current public debates. Learning from thousands of individual experiences, this book presents a clear agenda for action and provides more effective ways of keeping people out of micro poverty traps.

In Teaching with Poverty in Mind: What Being Poor Does to Kids' Brains and What Schools Can Do About It, veteran educator and brain expert Eric Jensen takes an unflinching look at how poverty hurts children, families, and communities across the United States and demonstrates how schools can improve the academic achievement and life readiness of economically disadvantaged students. Jensen argues that although chronic exposure to poverty can result in detrimental changes to the brain, the brain's very ability to adapt from experience means that poor children can also experience emotional, social, and academic success. A brain that is susceptible to adverse environmental effects is equally susceptible to the positive effects of rich, balanced learning environments and caring relationships that build students' resilience, self-esteem, and character. Drawing from research, experience, and real school success stories, Teaching with Poverty in Mind reveals * What poverty is and how it affects students in school; * What drives change both at the macro level (within schools and districts) and at the micro level (inside a student's brain); * Effective strategies from those who have succeeded and ways to replicate those best practices at your own school; and * How to engage the resources necessary to make change happen. Too often, we talk about change while maintaining a culture of excuses. We can do better. Although no magic bullet can offset the grave challenges faced daily by disadvantaged children, this timely resource shines a spotlight on what matters most, providing an inspiring and practical guide for enriching the minds and lives of all your students.

This is NOT a book about money... ... It's a book about thinking about money. In this book, you will NOT find a few quick ways to save a hundred bucks this month, or learn how to cheat the system here and there to save on your utility bills. But what you might find is a new way to think about yourself, the money you make and how it all fits into your broader worldview. This book in particular was written for those of us who might not have grown up with the right financial role models, or who have ingrained habits that are holding us back. So much budget and personal finance advice out there is about solving problems using the same thinking that created them. In essence, it's just about being more efficient at keeping yourself stuck in the same old mindset and repeating the same old mistakes. Not about how to actually break away from those mindsets, or learning why exactly you make the mistakes you do. This is why I won't be making suggestions about how to dilute your fabric softener to save money or how to shop around for interest rates. For the curious, that information is easily available, usually for free. Instead, this book tries to go a little deeper. It starts with a fact that many personal finance guides out there avoid like the plague: that we are NOT all created equal, we aren't all coming from the same place and we're not all blessed with a basic, neutral understanding of what money is and how to use it. In fact, most people stay poor not because they don't know to dilute their fabric softener or get the best interest rates. It's because they're thinking poor, and they don't know how to think in any other way. Of course, I'm not suggesting that generations of institutionalized poverty comes down to nothing more than attitude. Certainly, people who've never had the opportunity to develop a different mindset are at a disadvantage. But what I am saying is that if you identify as having grown up poor, the only way "out" is to change your mindset. It's beyond this book to explain why you have that mindset to start with, and in most cases, it's nobody's "fault." Nevertheless, we are all equal in one fundamental way: at every point, no matter who we are or what we've endured in the past, we can make conscious, beneficial decisions for ourselves. No matter what, we can act now in ways that will make tomorrow better than it was today. No matter how broke we are now or how much we've struggled, there's nothing to stop us from stopping, taking control, and thinking our way into a different lifestyle, one choice at a time. That is what I hope to show you in this book. So, if you've tried all the standard budget advice out there but still feel stuck in a financial rut, this guide can show you how to get to the root cause of why that is. You can learn how to start undoing those habits and start creating a lifestyle that actually supports your goals and dreams. By understanding the different relationships we can develop to money, we can start to unravel self-limiting beliefs and habits that keep us trapped beneath our potential. This book is not about cutting corners or saving a little extra each month - but it is about reworking your deepest thoughts about yourself, money and your place in the world.
